ANGELIC UPSTARTS LYRICS

"King Coal"

Putting on my wellington boots
Overall, boiler suit
Ready to face another day
Down the black hole to earn my pay

I loosen the ground just to fill my head
To keep me from thinking of the day I dread
Can you get me out of this dirty black hole
Or have I to face, old King Coal

Ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh

King Coal, down the hole
King Coal, black gold
King Coal, the lives he stole
King Coal, it takes bold

Now I've done it, dust fills my chest
I head like a horse, that baby [?]
There must be a way to get out of this mess
Leave it all with a little regret

No question of the comradeship
No doubting our good fellowship
Just a doubt to why they gave our all
To that old man, old King Coal

Ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh

King Coal, moulds the sole
King Coal, black mans hole
King Coal, the men of steal
King Coal, the rough deal

I loosen the ground just to fill my head
To keep me from thinking of the day I dread
Can you get me out of this dirty black hole
Or have I to face, old King Coal

Ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh

King Coal, down the hole
King Coal, black gold
King Coal, the lives he stole
King Coal, it takes bold

King Coal, moulds the sole
King Coal, black mans hole
King Coal, the men of steal
King Coal, the rough deal

Saw the Upstarts several times and they were a powerful band representing the proud North East. I have a few good friends from up there, hard as nails and proud. especially those old enough to remember the Tories decimating the northeast. Ah, but they now have copious amounts of Gregg's, cheap n' nasty pound shops and other tat and the like instead of prosperity and hope. It has never recovered like many other parts of the former industrial UK.: (

I don't read the S*N and Daily Maul to tell me what to believe, been there, got the t-shirt and seen with my own eyes how the poor have gotten more downtrodden whilst the capitalists get fuckin obese on avaricial slices of Southern cake. And the Tories are in downright ignorance and denial to the misery and hardship suffered up North. oppression.

Sadly, it is still suffering the remnants of Thatcherism, and the legacy she left still bares the scars some 40 years on. It is not something the Geordies and Mackems deserve. Redundant and cast on the slag-heap of life thanks to cheap imports and Maggie's iron fist..
