Punk and New Wave thread.

interesting debate whether you would class that as an affiliation
not a band i would class in the punk bracket, pub rock similar to dr feelgood for me
although love do anything you want to do
Having put up Barrie and Richard from the Hot Rods for years whenever they used to play in the north east I can confirm that they didn't consider themselves punk. They thought of themselves as pub rock

that's very interesting and fair enough,
but i'm pretty sure paul weller said the jam weren't punk.

the original post i replied to said
just watch a documentary on the jam
never realised they were the first punk affiliated band to appear on top of the pops
the key word being punk "affiliated",
which means connected or associated with.

it's worthy of debate at least.

ahem...

Absolutely mate. It depends on a definition of punk, and I'm sure most of us would disagree on what counts or doesn't.
In your examples, Brinsley Schwartz (Nick Lowe), Ducks Deluxe and Dr Feelgood are all pub rock to me and I'd be more likely to accept the Hot Rods than any of those as punk. I must admit, I never really considered The Jam to be punk either, so was a bit surprised at that 'claim to fame'.

yeah, mate.

i'd say,
if a band is willing to play a festival that is calling itself punk,
then they are affiliated in some way,
or if not then they're jumping on the bandwagon.

i personally don't class any of the bands you mention as punk,
including the jam.
like i said, i was responding to "affiliated".

as for a definition of what is punk.
i'd say a state of mind not how you dress or sing.

i'm 61, dreadlocks on top and shaved sides.
i don't dress in a punk style, quite smart at times,
but i'm rarely not wearing a crass t-shirt or summat that gives it away.

amazing how many people collar me and say "hey, crass!"

i was talking with someone a couple of months ago in stansted wetherspoons who said he "used to be a punk".
my reply was...
"then you never were a punk.
it's a lifetime thing not a fashion."

anyroad, i wonder,
if we discount the hots rods and the jam,
who the actual first true punk band on totp were?

the adverts?
gary gilmore.
late 1977.

I'd say it was the Saints doing This Perfect Day
Slightly before the Adverts I believe

I don't count Go Buddy Go (May 77 I think)

the very reason i used that word ;-)

in the city used the influences of the raw energy that punk brought
its ideals were punk enough of course
by all mod cons the jam were way past being punk but at the start you could argue they were

yeah, i tend to agree.

weller has since said tamla motown was his biggest influence for the jam.

dunno what people will think of this.

it's recent, 2months ago.
they are from malmo in sweden.

i love it to bits.
reminds me of a fair few early 80's bands,
sonic youth, buttholes, xmal, virgin prunes, et cetera.
but not any band in particular.

have a listen if you can be arsed.
imho it definitely grows on you.

Had it on the background while doing some work, so didn’t listen to it too carefully, but it sounds good! Very Sonic Youth to my ears, but also some Sugarcubes in there too. I’ll definitely go back and listen to it properly.

Funnily enough I've just been reminiscing with an old mate of mine who went to lots of gigs i did. We both saw Crass at the Mayflower club in Gorton and at another small club in Hulme but we can't remember the name, can you?

My mate thinks it was possibly UMIST but i don't...
