For about the 49,000th time I've said it, the reason the traditional media outlets have moved to the elevation of extreme viewpoints is because that's what the internet has allowed and traditional media outlets have to compete.And i agree, two extreme's a debate does not make.
A debate about the Moon's influence on tides with a Professor of Astrophysics and a bloke from Colchester who says it is made out of cheese is not balance.
The democratization of the bully pulpit allows the amplification of extreme views that would never have made their way through quality control (i.e. vetting and editing) at traditional media outlets. And allows for instantaneous free distribution of those views to a nearly unlimited audience.
In other words, in the old days, you actually had to KNOW SOMETHING to be interviewed on TV, or to get quoted in the newspaper.
