It is rumored that Sane has had severe family issues this year with his mum and dad being at odds.
It is entirely possible his head isn’t right and why he hasn’t featured much this year.
Or he wasn’t feeling up to the pressure and said something to pep.
Or he shafted peps Missus.

All I’m saying is there are perhaps other reasons we don’t see as to why he didn’t start rather than pep being an idiot, which this forum would do well to remember.

Sane plays much higher up the pitch than Mahrez in the attacking sense, who likes to drive inside with the ball and pass into midfield (don't get me started).

However, Sane's game is much more prone to turnover of the ball because he plays high percentage football, which we all love him for but the risk/rewards are greater when it comes to quality teams transitioning against us on the break, those are the margins.

Mahrez also played well against Spurs earlier this season and was trusted to cover his full-back at Anfield.

I am Sane's biggest fan but Christ on a bike, he's a fucker still for not getting back in when countered.

Add to the fact Mahrez delivers a whipped cross from far deeper than Sane generally would, it is easy to see why, with Bernado's industry also missing, Pep decided to start Mahrez.

Incidentally, I am not a fan of Mahrez but did suggest in the pre-match thread that it wouldn't surprise me if he started.

I was less than enamoured when the team came out. But pep has forgotten more than I’ll ever know so you hope he has it right. I thought we were very poor and played in to spurs hands. We couldnt get any penetration and looked toothless.

However, for 75 minutes so did Tottenham so if Peps plan was to contain then it has to be admitted it was working.

For me, the real issue is not that he didn’t start kev or sane but that he waited until 88 minutes to bring them on. After son scored we needed a reply. An away goal is vital. What was to be gained by giving them 2 mins plus stoppage time? Get them warmed up for the cool down? Save Silva 2 minutes of game time? Made no sense at all. That is my gripe.

He didn't start because he don't work back nothing more nothing less great with the ball but without he is poor & needs to get this part of the game in the bag, he does that he plays regular against better teams with decent fullbacks IMO

Have to say those 88 min subs were the most unlike Pep moment I've ever seen. Bernardo getting injured really screwed with his head with team selection.

Every player in the vicinity seemed to go to sleep for a half second or so...

Can’t remember the match but a few noted it the other week...bad habit among some of the players of not playing to the whistle and petitioning the ref in the midst of play. There’s an insecurity and a fragility to it that’s unfortunate and, in this case, costly. Reminds me of certain types of controlling perfectionists who become frustrated and off kilter in the face of the occasional injustices, pressures, and ambiguities of reality.

I do think pep and the players psych themselves out quite a bit for champs league (and even cup games in general) - whether via selection, quality of play, or the rash challenges and elbows that suddenly start flying. They very often simply don’t look like themselves.

And I don’t think it’s helped by those odd selections, which further undermine the confidence of the team, take them out of the comfort of their most overwhelming rhythm where they can settle down and feel themselves, and thus the whole chain compounds the pressure they’re already feeling. From group stage on this has been a horribly shaky CL campaign.

A big result in the second leg may kill the hex though!
