QF 1st Leg Post Match Thread

Except it would have made sense to do it the other way round, ie play KdB in the away rather than the home leg, for 2 reasons:
1) His 3 games would then be more spaced out - instead of 3 games in 7 days he’d be playing 3 in 12.
2) Going full-on in the away leg may pay more dividends than doing so in the home leg, as each goal scored is “worth more”.
Both your points make sense it’s just that after playing 90mins against Cardiff and Brighton Pep maybe felt he couldn’t play at Spurs. Like I said before none of us know whether he had a niggle or whether the sports scientists said he wasn’t up to it so we’re pretty much guessing. I don’t aim this comment at you but to me that’s a more plausible explanation for his absence rather than the “Pep bottled it” theory that other blues believe to be the case

Possibly but on past tinkering I doubt it. What about Sane? He's not tired.

I'm not anti-Pep. How could any City fan be, I just feel that on this occasion he got his team selection wrong and when looking to understand why, I see a past trend. I think previous comment/losses have put him on edge in these games. I used to treat any criticism of City as sacrilege but realised over time it's all inconsequential.

Your problem Marv is you dont want to listen to anything that goes against your agenda that you "know for sure" pep got it wrong. There have been plausible responses posted as to why Sane wasn't selected, and you have ignored them. Similar to the question I posed you last night which you have also ignored and we all know why.

IMHO, you generally post good stuff to stimulate a debate but with this, the hole you have dug is now so deep, you wont back down so you just keep on digging

There is not much more fundamental to coaching than the line up and subs. He clearly picked a side not to take risks and stay in the tie, i.e. avoid the debacle of Anfield last season. That's my opinion. I believe City paid the price for Pep dealing with the demons of his CL past when we would have been much better off attacking them and playing or usual game. You clearly think so too, but leave other people to say it. In fact I bet 95% of blues are totally bemused at what Pep was trying to do but none will say it.

Marv, I at least now know why you have a downer with Pep, it is because you have confirmed how clueless you are - sorry mate, but that highlighted is from a 5 year old.

With that one sentence, you have lost any credibility to argue in this thread imo

Either that or you have been on the WUM (you have a get out option with that :))

Delph's charge sheet is vast and varied, yet Pep has been forced to use him because of Mendy's injuries and Zin also not available.

We can point to his red cards at Wigan and Leicester but he was also at fault for the first goal last season in the 4-3 defeat at Liverpool.

He was also at fault for United getting it back to 1-1 at half-time away.

He was also at fault for failing to clear the ball against Lyon at home?

He was also at fault for the penalty diving in at Swansea.

When you break it down like that, it's a miracle Pep and this team has achieved what it has with him anywhere near the starting line-up.

that's some rap sheet, laporte must be better in the short term

On it’s own no.
Going for everything, who knows?

And that is probably one of the reasons you are posting on here and i am also.

Mental toughness, these players have that. I dont see any bottlers in our squad, far from it.

You may also have been just plain shit at football.

In all honesty I wouldn’t be too upset to exit this competition and focus on the league and fa cup.

That said, pep has had a shocker tonight....rode his luck with the selection....fair enough, but failing to gauge the right time for changes is unforgivable. I can only think he totally overthought the whole thing and got so caught up with the im0lications of tired players late April that he forgot to focus on a game at a time....

Fuck me, but spurs are very average
Average, Shit , I’ve read it all on this site over the last few days . A team in the top 6 is not Average , a team that beat the then Top team in Germany is not average .
People moaning about Rose , holding off one of your players , and Not one mention of how Fernandinho should have been sent off for the elbow into the back of Kane’s head . Then when Kane went to block Delphi’s clearance , he followed through and caught Kane on the ankle .
It 1-0 and all to play for .
When you spent more on 4 defenders than Spurs have in the last 3 years , when in EVERY game your bench has cost more than most teams First X1 , to be condescending enough to call any opponent Average is Arrogant

TBF to Marvin, although heaven knows why I should be, couldn't it be possible to interpret that sentence more than one way? Whatever, it's a gross oversimplification.

BTW, I thought Marv's credibility on this topic went with his line about Pep not learning from mistakes ;-)

He did the same thing at Anfield and did it again at Spurs. I don't know what he did whilst manager of Bayern but I am aware of some heavy defeats to the Spanish clubs at the latter stages of the competition, so I think it's reasonable to look at his management of these games when everything else he seems to touch turns to gold.

You're way too sensitive. Money has bought quality and City's squad is amongst the best in the world. Your club chooses not to invest in their squad. That's their decision. Ultimately I think you may regret that approach.

Kane's injury is bad, but on this occasion he has no one to blame but himself for that challenge.
