Excuse my ignorance lads, but where did the expression "Rag" originate from when referring to the other lot?

I find that quite offensive pal, and not very informative. Suppose if you were a real City man you would be able to tell me right enough!!!!!

The term rags comes from when we had to lend them a kit as they had nothing to play in.

The term originates from the 1947 to 1949 seasons, when Utd didn't have extra shirts so they played in the same kits. They began to look a bit worn, hence 'rags'.

There seem to be a few story's about it and i was told that when old trafford was bombed during WW2 they had to borrow rags (old kits) from us for their kit and we then started calling them the rags.

Think that's a bit of an urban myth.
Football was suspended during WW2 and our shirts would have been the wrong colour! Nice thought though. ;-)
