irresponsible spending, drinking, individualism, materialism, these are traits that can be exploited for massive profit.
what matters is having a flexible workforce. too bad if that is incompatible with them being part of a stable community, spending time with their kids. the security and respect that is behind all good society is a thing of the past in the globalised, rationalised, short-term contract, targeted and measured commercial enviroment.
community, decency, restraint, helpfulness.... these are what matter to the people, but the people aren't listed on the stock exchange, have no lobby group, can't pay for your campaign. most of them don't even realise what they've lost. they have no real power. It's nothing to do with middle england. It's the whole sodding world. The numbers on the spreadsheets that make up the tables that rule everything from education to end-of-year accounts, these are the reality now. everything else is flaky, subjective, unprofitable, uneconomic, incompatible with management theory, impossible to quantify, and if you can't quantify it, you can't massage the numbers to prove you are winning.
fuck 'em all, I say. read another book. words are closer to the truth. ideas will change, it will come full circle. there are hiding places everywhere, and if that's not enough, the people you know and love aren't interested in your productivity, they are interested in what you say and what you feel.
