Racist Everton?

There were incessant references to Everton's attitude to race, all the way into the early nineties. I remember it being quite high on my radar because people used to say it existed as much at board room level as it did amongst their general fan base.

According to Wikipedia, Mike Trebilcock was the first "black" player to score in an FA Cup Final back in 1966 but, as a kid, I don't remember him even being coloured at all. Does anyone have any photos of him?

He looks half-cast but hard to tell in black and white.

yes he was mixed race although his skin colour was somewhere between that of ryan giggs & theo walcott.

We've had some scum fans in the past and still do, I wouldn't deny that we had a vocal racist contingent and it is deeply saddening. I would point that Everton, although having massive racism problems, were not alone. I'd say Everton-Chelsea and Leeds were all similar in their race issues, I remember people actively zieg heiling at Elland Road and their fans still have large connections with the BNP/etc.

It has been pushed out now, of course there are still some idiots about but we are starting to see more ethnic minorities come to Goodison. A good mate of mine is black and says he hasn't experienced racism but his dad supported Liverpool because he thought he wouldn't be abused.

The UK, and Liverpool, has come a lot further over the past 20, even 10 years and racism just isn't acceptable anymore, when back in those days it was. I'm someone who misses the old atmosphere but you can see that one of the main benefits of the new kind of crowds it the abolishment of racism in football grounds.

the everton lad's are right, there was an element at most clubs in the '80's. i remember being on the stretford end against watford (i was 9 and my dad and brother took me) with the crowd chanting the infamous "trigger" chant at barnes and blissett whenever watford came down that end. as a lad of that age, it was extremely raw and gave me the impression that racism was normal and acceptable. it took me a good few years to realise what knobs these people were.

this is undeniabley true in case any rags are thinking of re-writing history......
