Radio Commentary nostalgia

Very true, arguably the most important moment in our history(not saying the best or most glamorous) but things may well have been very different had that not gone in. Great commentary, sheer relief as much as anything else from the commentators(and we still had extra time and pens to get through!).
Going back a bit before this, remember the commentaries on the away games in Europe used to sound quite' muffled'. Obviously technology has moved on ,but in those days the commentators sounded like they were speaking through a sock on the microphone!
I was going to post the same about sound quality. The world cups in the 70/80's with the muffled sound on the TV coverage always sounded somehow more exciting and "far away". Difficult to explain exactly but the muffled sound always added something to the coverage.

peter jones will always be the voice of bbc radio. Grew up in the 70s and i would play imaginary matches inside my head using his voice as a backdrop

Am I wrong about this? Years ago I used to listen to Alan Green, and I appreciated his commentaries. I don't remember him being so manifestly biased in favour of one club. Sure, in those years, Liverpool were top dog, so it was understandable that he gave them particular attention. As did all broadcasters. Same with United in the following two decades. What is odd is his continuing loud and open bias despite the fact that the days of Liverpool and United dominance are now well in the past.

Also, sorry, I know I should feel guilty about this but I used to love Stuart Hall's dandyism in his commentaries before he fell from grace. It also helped that he was one of the very few that shouted our corner. And he did it with style, and poetry.
It's a bit like Michael Jackson and his doings with under-age children. Disgusting. But you still bop to “Billy Jean”.

Peter Jones was a great broadcaster. A teacher by profession for whom words were his stock in trade.
He witnessed and broadcast on both Hysel and Hillsboro. Google “last Hillsboro report by Peter Jones“ for a masterpiece.
Sadly died too young while commentating on the Boat Race.
He died with the microphone in his hand.

Ken Wolstenholme. Sure that he knew and cared nothing about football. The bog standard of “commentating” in those days was saying who had passed the ball to who. That is, if you could remember the names of the players (and he often couldn't). Also, telling you that a player had scored a goal when… a player had scored a goal! Thanks, Ken.
But he'll always remain immortal for: They think it's all over!
