Radio memories

sat in my kitchen ,listening to the york away match ,i think i was the only city fan not there,
I was in the garage making a base for my youngster's model railway Christmas present. According to legend though, that's what I told the Mrs, as secretly I was at York away along with the other 125,000 Blues. Amazingly I was back in Cumbria by 5pm and changed back into my overalls prior to discreetly walking back into the house.

Bryon Buttler and Peter jones on radio 2 was something to behold no agenda no bias just sheer descriptive pleasure , Jimmy arnfield and Denis Law would do the summerising during the second half full commentary.
Sky and talksport and 5 live are not fit to carry the bags of equipment.

Not wanting to derail the thread into non-City memories but the Peter Jones summation of the afternoon at Hillsborough is a couple of minutes of emotional eloquence that still brings goosebumps.

You must have read my mind as I was going to post the same about Butler & Jones. Brilliant commentary and they could make the dullest game sound exciting.

Then we got Alan fucking Green.

God yes, he was awful. Always wanted to make the commentary about himself when no one gave a shiny shite about him.

So true. They were the masters of commentary. So professional yet they made it so exciting. The tension and tone of their voices.

Absolutely- buttler & Jones were superb, always on the money, also with a light hearted comment as well

Juventus away 1977ish Fogged off the day before. Listened to the whole match on radio Manchester at around 2.30 pm whilst at a school fucking play. I think it was a 2 all draw. The radio was the most reliable peice of news in the day.
Brother in laws Aberdeeen I fink Rosler days but he put the radio on , yes Radio an we won away at Blackburn Fkin brilliant Then I washed the pots

As others have said the “oh no” or “it’s a goal jingle” were brilliant on a Saturday afternoon. Nothing better than listening to an 80s classic waiting for those jingles to interrupt the tunes.
Yep Brilliant

It wasn't Schalke 04 in the semi final second leg was it ? If it was, I was relying on the BBC and they announced it as City 1 Schalke 5 before correcting it. Gave this 11 year old a heart attack !
Yes mate I think that was the game,I was 12 at the time myself,I remember being giddy as we had reached 2 cup finals in the same season

I think a book on what happened that day was named after his commentary line...."and here at Hillsborough the sun still shines"

I remember Granada giving an update saying we were losing 2-0, then telling my old man that score when he came in work only for him to tell me that was wrong and we winning 3-0.

FA Cup 4th round January 1956 en route to winning cup. Southend away on a total mudbath at Roots Hall. Listened with my Dad as Southend battered us for 90 minutes but a Joe Hayes goal saw us through. Nerve racking listening to live commentary on BBC radio. It may have been Raymond Glendenning commentating. What a voice he had.
