Manchester City lose out to United again as ITV snub Champions League debut

Manchester United's reputation as the biggest draw in English football has been underlined by ITV's decision to show them rather than Manchester City in the Champions League.
Television executives have chosen United's opener against Benfica as their live game on ITV1 next month, even though City's debut in the competition is on the same night.
Screen test: City have lose out in the latest head to head
United traditionally attract the biggest TV audience in the country but the excitement generated by City's £400million spending spree means there will also be plenty of interest in their first Champions League game, against Napoli on September 14.
'A choice had to be made for their opening fixture,' a source said. 'City are in the news a great deal but United have a huge following and their visit to Benfica is a very attractive looking game.'
The Manchester clubs are scheduled to play their six group games on the same night as each other - three on Tuesdays and three on Wednesdays.
Sky Sports will show the Tuesday night games and its multi-channel facility will allow it to show both clubs live at the same time.
IT V has to choose which team to show on its flagship station for its three Wednesday night games. No firm decision has been made for fixtures after the opening ties.
Meanwhile, Paul Scholes will hold talks with manager Sir Alex Ferguson over a coaching role this week.

Sky snub the rags and choose city. sky is far better at coverage and we will see far better and longer pre match coverage so I for one think this is fine. Plus I presume the majority will be there.

Interesting choice made by ITV, although not a surprise. The global audience for united is enormous compared to City's and clearly money is the driving force here.
However, I wonder if the 'impartial' audience is bigger.....and might like to see if MegaBucks City can live up to the hype.
We had better play some sexy football in the next season or two if we really are going to knock them off their (revenue saturated) perch.

This is the crux of the matter. Would the neutral prefer to watch another in a long line of United Champions League games or City's first ever game in the competition? My money would be on the latter so if both games were broadcast 'head to head' I bet the majority would watch City.

i don't think so. there is an incredible amount of plastic united fans around the country. i've lived in hull for 12 years and it amazing how many there are. this is probably the same nationwide. for tv figures nationwide, they'd piss it because most blues would be at eastlands while united are away and have millions of 'fans'.

Well, City are at home so hopefully 45000 of their audience will be at the Etihad watching and others can pick the game up on Sky.
ManUre are away and therefore 75000 potential viewers plus the armchairs will help boost ITV's advertising rates for this game.
Surprising how the media just build up a head to head battle over something so trivial.
I'll be gutted missing out on ITV's ManUre coverage, oh no I won't I'll be at the Etihad!
