Rags Writing City Reports For MEN

I think we might be on the same track but I've got a nasty habit of rambling on here.

Small world. I'm not him, by the way. Or any of the occupants of his tool shed either. Just in case you were wondering.

Classic City/Swales scenario that he was involved in though.

john you don't half go on, but you are dead right in this case. the media is actually being pretty bloody kind to us right now, i've read many positive comment pieces in different papers over the last month or two. If we play good football and find ourselves in the top four at the expense of arsenal, the media will wet themselves.

Although I ended up sharing your assesment of hughes' performance this season, it seems to me that keeping him has helped dispel the idea that our owners are only interested in big names, big money, and instant success. in other words, it's undone a lot of the damage to our credibility that al-fahim's big mouth encouraged.

Absolutely bang on the money, there, bizzbo.

We suffered badly from that bigmouth when we were first taken over. The dust has only just settled.

I also have big question marks over hughes but I agree that sacking him would have given the press another angle - "Trigger Happy Arabs Desperate For Success" or whatever. I'm not saying that was necessarily a reason to keep him, but it's definitely improved the public's perception of our owners.

And JMA, I also cringed when I read that article about the press "fearing us". Noone fears us yet as we are still a midtable club with a propensity to shoot ourselves in the foot. I/'m as much like a parrot as you are on this subject, but if we do get some real success it will be good for football and the press, and public, will lap it up. The same old tope 4 every season is boring for everyone.

I didn't understand all of that but I don't think out two arguments are a million miles apart at base in any case
Your argument is narrow self-interest leads to journalists consciously or unconsciously finding angles to criticise challengers to the top 4

His theory is that journalists share the same opinions / jealousies that all fans share, and that Fleet St have treated the emergence of Spurs and Villa positively in the past. He adds that journalists couldn't possibly be that stupid to think that their arguments would serve their supposed self-interest

I'm sure Kinky by name can answer for himself, but I don't think that's what he said - as I read it, he was arguing that inertia motivates their response as they have good contacts at the Big 4, but that this will change - as he says in the quote below:

The sports desks at the nationals are not scared of City success... they jut don't want it particularly; they have their (top four) contacts and comfort zones and that's all there is to it. You'd think they'd welcome the shake-up wouldn't you? And they will... eventually but it will take time.

Seems pretty similar to JMA's standpoint to me.

I didn't know he was a rag but I could tell he was just reading his articles. He throws in the occasional swipe.
