This sounds like a really simple thing, but if you look at Foden's goal, Sterling waits and waits to give the pass until the exact moment the defender closest to Phil stops running backwards and has to try to challenge Sterling.
It's a tiny little thing, but just waiting that extra couple of seconds to give the pass means there's no chance of the defender getting anywhere near Foden and he has plenty of time to weigh up the shot.
Those are the kinds of little things Sterling wasn't doing 18 months ago, he'd give it as soon as the pass was on, and then the defender would have a chance to block the shot or get across.
This season he's just doing things like that. He's not just picking the right pass, but he's also timing things perfectly, or sometimes disguising what he's doing and adding some subtlety.
I hear what your saying dom,and your correct re the timing of the pass to Foden...but i think you do Sterling a disservice...he has ,maybe, always had the ability to play a pass like that, its just becase he is chosen to play out on the flanks, his true ball playing ability is probably not shown.
By way of example, almost exactly 3 years ago,City went to roker park in the league cup and turned in a devastating performance against the mackems; following one particular lightning counter attack Kdb on the left flank plays the ball inside to Sterling ,who controls it,and returns a delicious slide rule pass into the on running kdbs,s path...our Kev then bamboozles the keeper by scoring on his near post from an acute angle. This was part of a 4-1 away win which i still say didnt get the credit it deserved.City were sublime that night, under Manuel....
I think back also to our pre season friendly at Hamburg, under Keegan(great trip, great stadium) Keegan played SWP in central midfield.no one had ever seen him play there before,it was always right wing/wingback but Sweep put in a fine performance, holding his own against the german midfielders, spraying the ball about in an adroit, controlled, central- midfield display...
I think a lot of footballers get labelled in a certain posistion, when their talents actually enable them to step into another role seamlessly. .....i really do think that Raheem,as other posters have noted, has a lot more in his locker than the average football fan realises.i include myself here, because earlier in the thread id commented on his brilliant pass to Silva v Huddersfield. Id forgotten about the 1-2 with kdb 3 years ago!
A lot more to come from this consummate professional footballer, imo. And Pep is definitely the right coach for him to blossom under.
