We showed during the Suarez affair that we'd only sell if we wanted to. It didn't matter how much Suarez said he wanted to leave, we made him stay. He then had his best season ever.
Sterling is probably not worth £50m in the standard market, but as many of you point out, he's one of our two top players, so to US he is worth every bit of that, probably more.
If Sterling is made to stay for his remaining 2 years, it could easily be worth more in the long run and being under 24, we'd still get a fee for him (upwards of £10m) when his contract expires.
Simply put, Liverpool have no reason to sell him, so it is up to Man City to make us an offer we can't refuse, like Barca did for Suarez.
