We all need to remember that QPR are taking 20% as well so Liverpool won't be getting £50m, they'll be getting £40m. Spend £32.5m on Benteke and ask who's really getting mugged off here?

That would also send out a message to players that City will tap me up, but when push comes to shove they will leave me high and dry and won't follow it through. Not the best message to send out.
How is bidding for a player twice and being turned down 'tapping up'?

Thanks to the core of players signed by Cook. Hart, Zab, Kompany, Silva, Yaya and Aguero. The new regime have been complacent and thought they could simply sign complimentary squad players rather than expensive first teamers. Now we are in a shit position because Yaya is 32, we have no home grown players, and many of the squad players like Fernando and Sagna have proved to be quite shit.

Ok whatever.

As I posted before they don't negotiate when selling a valuable assest to a rival we really should have known this. This is liverpool not Sunderland. They set a fee you either pay it or move on Torres and Suarez prove what they are like. If we wasn't prepared to go to 50m I wish we wouldn't have gone for him.

Him refusing to sign a £100k a week contract mid season suggests he knew another club was in for him. Plus him asking to not go on tour. Typical Txiki tactic from Barcelona. Think he needs to remember we aren't Barcelona.

Txiki will walk away from this deal feeling like Billy Big Bollocks for not having been pushed around by Liverpool and leave us without a potentially World Class player and a young kid to face the vitriol of a club filled with mindless fuckheads.

Garry Cook wasn't hindered by FFP. You can't really overlook that.

Also, if I'm being pedantic Hart was signed well before Cook's reign, and Zabaleta and Kompany were signed pre-takeover, so weren't subject to the "City premium".

You could also point to the likes of Adebayor, Roque Santa Cruz, Jo, Robinho et al signed by Cook who hardly represented value for money.

Don't get me wrong, Cook a lot of good things for the club but some of the revisionism is a bit much.

Assuming we have tapped him up!

Okay in the real world we will have but he could still join us in 12 months time and get a huge signing on fee to ease his discomfort.

He could, and get vilified for the next year while he's at it. Maybe not forgive us for leading him down the garden path and join someone else.

That's the bit that's really pissing me off. Sterling imo is worth no more than £40m.

I believe Liverpool think the same but expect us to pay £50m to cover QPR's cut.

QPR get a cut because Liverpool got him cheap as a kid. Why should we (effectively) pay QPR?

Ultimately poor planning over the last 3/4 seasons has put us in this situation for homegrown players. That is the single biggest failure of the board so far imo. Moves should of been made to make sure we had enough HG players for the future and wouldn't be needing to make sure we had to make signings like this to cover that rule. Yes he might be a world class player but if we didn't need HG at this point we would have other targets who we could be trying to get instead. The unique particulars of the player in question means it really is him or potentially noone because we couldn't accommodate another foreign player. The fact we have an overseas backup GK at this stage is also baffling. It is an easy position to fill with someone HG and good enough to be backup and wouldn't cause so much pressure on other positions we need to strengthen.

This is just all the more reason why refusing to meet their valuation when we're already close is a bit pointless. Our desperation for decent home grown players is well known - We've created this problem and Liverpool are just taking advantage. If we were awash with homegrown players and were just in the market for a fast wide forward, we would tap up Sterling, have him kick off, tell Liverpool to go fuck themselves and their 50 million and watch it all fall apart until we got him for sod all. What's going on now is PR posturing, that's all. Liverpool wanting the world to know you can't take their players easily, which is fine, that can have blow back with future signings when they decline because they don't think Henry will ever let them leave, and us wanting the world to know just because we're rich doesn't mean we'll pay whatever the first number the selling club pulls out of a hat, which is daft, because every top club pays top whack for top players.

Forget it, if they're being difficult just leave him there and grab their man-crush Alexandre Lacazette. That's what I'm going with at the moment with the hope it comes to fruition.

I could have seen the point of offering them, say, 30mill and then letting Sterling agitate for a move and see how it worked out. But for 5mill it hardly seems worth it.
The ball now seems to be in our court. We've tested their resolve. They seem to be standing firm. Two choices. Pay up or walk away.

All valid points Ric, but with Cook you got some very bad signings and some world class signings.

If I listed all of Txiki's signings only Demichellis, Fernandinho and arguably Negredo have been great. The rest have all been average really. It's just all been quite mundane. That said I hope Mangala's and Bony have long careers with us.

Dipper fan adamant that he will stay and said players only come to use for the money! Shot them down by saying what about Vinnie, silva, hart, Alguero etc.. Shut them right up.
Sterling will be a city player before the widow shuts I am sure of that

Fair enough mate, but that takes me back to my first point - namely FFP. That has completely changed the landscape, so you can't fairly compare deals before 2012 with those afterwards.
