Raheem Sterling - Done - See main forum

I honestly think that of our three big targets this is easily the most likely to be done. I don't see how LIverpool and Sterling can recover any kind of relationship now. Can you really see Sterling running out of that tunnel at Anfield first home game next season, after everything that's been said, all the shit that's been thrown at him by fans and "pundits" alike? Wolfsburg, on the other hand, have got no particular need to sell De Bruyne, and every reason to keep him. The one thing in our favour there, apart from the cash, is that Wolfsburg are never going to break the stranglehold that Bayern have got on their league, or get near it. I respect what they've done, but their limit is obvious. And Juve might well decide to just hold on to Pogba. Why wouldn't they? They've just won their league at a canter, and been finalists in the CL. What just might work in our favour there is not this year, but next: if — if — Pep comes here.

Sterling can't fall into this trap. He has to play along and do everything they ask. Just keep his head down and let nature take its course.
IANAL but I do wonder to what levels lfc will continue to bully Sterling. In the Mirror today there were threats that Liverpool may put him in the reserves. There is clearly character assassination going on by ex-lfc players and there is the isssue of the public leak of his phone number. If there is a possibility of getting any evidence to back up any linkage with lfc and the character assassination or phone leak then, together with any over the top actions such as letting their best player languish in the reserves as a punishment (this must be restraint of trade, especially in the season preceeding the Euro Championships), I wonder if his lawyers would be willing to go to court over constructive dismissal by bullying and get his contract annulled. Probably not... but a pleasant thought as it would make spectacular entertainment and great business opportunities selling candles in Merseyside.

We don't have to care about the price, and if we pay Liverpool I won't be too bothered (although it would be nice to see them blink first). But the people in charge have to keep an eye on the budget. £5m saved on one player, can be £5m put towards a better offer on another. It can help us with things like FFP and other investments. And it's just not one player, if we have a reputation of jumping in and paying the full asking price without a battle clubs will take advantage of it on every transfer we go for going forward.
Or towards Delph.

If we want to be a sugar daddy club forever, then sure, let's just keep tossing our owners money at the issue, and all other fans will be RIGHT - we're a sugar daddy club.
We have said all along, that our investment is NOT some sugar daddy spending spree but a genuine injection to turn us into a credible BUSINESS.
If we are true to our word, then the cost does matter. We are still fortunate enough to now have revenues that allow us to spend handsomely and compete with the best, but they are not so high that simply don't care what we spend. We have to operate professionally from top to bottom and that includes what we spend.

That's not saying we can't go out and spend 100m on someone. It just means that we won't spend a penny more than we believe something is worth. No proper business will ever do that.

It's true that if you want the best, you have to pay for the best. It's not true that if you want the best you should pay more than what the best is worth.
Even if our current bid was accepted that's still over what he is worth though? So why does 5 more matter when you're already paying probably 15 mill than someone's worth? Already overpaying as it is.

It's more than what you (and I for that matter) think he's worth, but we don't know what City think he's worth, and that's the crucial factor. We will NOT be paying more than we think he's worth though.
It matters hugely for reasons I've explained in previous posts. 5m overspent here is 5m unavailable elsewhere, which could be another transfer, or 10 more jobs in the marketing department).

We go into a negotiation knowing our limits (whatever they may be). If we come out having broken our own limits, we shouldn't be in business.

There was some debate on this in the past with other players, possibly Adebayour with us, and other players at other clubs. It's an interesting topic if a club are bullying a player. There absolutely are grounds for constructive dismissal, but it's not as clear cut as 'put in the reserves = bullying'. I can see someone taking it to court one day. A lot goes on in football that's atypical, but it's still subject to employment law like all other jobs.
Can't see Sterling being the test case though.

When have we announced what we think Sterling is worth?

it's hard to see how the article in The Mirror hasn't been driven by Liverpool Football Club and presumably it's designed to show everyone, including us, Sterling and his agent, that Liverpool are in control of the situation. The constant leaking, and aggressive nature, of some if the stuff coming out of Anfield must be taking its toll on Sterling. Somehow City have to keep the lad happy, positive and confident that we are committed to signing him, whilst simultaneously showing Liverpool that we will not be held to ransom by them.

It's Time for one or to two on here to take a chill pill. The deal with will have been done and it's just the loose ends to be tied up. The bin dippers have too much to lose in this deal to let it fall through.
As I see it RS just needs to sort things out financially with the yanks in terms of a settlement (they are not likely to be happy in having to pay him a loyalty bonus but as things stand unless he puts in a transfer request they surely will). Once this is agreed he will join us in Melbourne.

To suit both parties It will end up being fee undisclosed

I don't think it will be for peanuts if he isn't sold in this window,If the price goes down in a future window in the next 6-12 months it won't be by much especially if Chelsea and Arsenal are part of the bidding. They was a meeting yesterday from reports at fenway park with Henry Gordon and Warner are supposed to be relaxed about it and are willing to sell in january if you do not meet the £50 million valuation.
he'll be worth about three bob by then, brilliant negotiating tactics

Absolutely no chance

We may go with the fee undisclosed rout

But the way Liverpool have been leaking this drip by drip to the press for months they will leak £50 million at least and say they got everything they wanted.

They have got to look to be saving face, after all they are Liverpool “a special club”

Probably dropping a few other bad stories about Sterling to friendly reporters to show how good they have been.

The closer to next summer (when he effectively becomes a free agent) the more his value will fall.
Of course interest from other clubs might help to offset some of his dwindling value, but his value will never be higher than now (between now and summer).

I'm away at the moment but noticed Gerard has been putting his oar in about loyalty

First of all, he was all but a Chelsea player until his 'change of heart' and has now fucked off to America at the first sign of not being a regular

Second, banging on about Henderson, the ex-Sunderland player, but we won't dewel on that one.......

Thirdly, the character assessenation of Sterling, a 20yr old is nothing short of disgraceful - similar to Anelka when he left Arsenal

Having said all that, City need to just cough up. I know it's not my money but what's the difference between 45 and 50mil? Sterling has done his bit so now it's time to pony up

Want to buy 45 quids worth of petrol from me for 50 quid? it's only 5 quid extra right?
