BBC SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR AWARD
This award goes to the sportsperson whose actions have most captured the UK public's imagination during 2019.
1. (Ben Stokes - sporting, Raheem Sterling - using sporting influence to address racism)
An expert independent panel (hereafter 'the Panel') will convene in November 2019 to decide the shortlist of sportspeople for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. The composition of the Panel is published below.
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year production team will provide the Panel with an extensive list of the top sportspeople from 2019, including information on their achievements. The Panel will be free to consider other potential candidates.
The Panel will select a shortlist of sportspeople for the main award on the basis of the following criteria:
*Reflects UK sporting achievements on the national and/or international stage;
2. Ben Stokes, Dina Asher-Smith, Lewis Hamilton, Alun Wyn Jones
*Represents the breadth and depth of UK sports; and
Takes into account 'impact' of the person's sporting achievement beyond the sport in question.
3. Dina, Raheem
* Sportspeople are eligible to be nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award if they are UK citizens or all of the following criteria apply:
they play a significant amount of their sport in the UK; and
their core achievements that year were achieved in the UK, and not with a non-UK based team (in which case they would more likely qualify for the World Sport Star award); and
they are residents in the UK.
4. Well, that should have ruled out Hamilton since 2007, but he won it in 2014.
1. I’m not picking Dina Asher-Smith in 1. As athletics is not as big a sport as cricket or football and it’s not an Olympic or. Commonwealth games year.
2. DAS > KJT
3. Biggest impact is Raheem, but 2 qualifying criteria.
4. This should also rule out DAS & KJT as top level athletics is international, crap criterion.
Note, the above rules show that it is NOT about sports ‘personality’, it’s sports ‘person’.
If it was Sports personality Raheem Sterling should win it.
Ben Stokes will get points dropped for being a bad boy in the nightclub incident. Nevertheless, the WC ODI New Zealand game will win best sporting moment.
Dina Asher-Smith made the greatest individual achievement in her sport for many a year.
It should go to Raheem based on the way that he has led the fight to make significant changes in the world’s most popular sport in combating racism whilst competing at the highest level, but as a City fan I’m biased and it’s probably already decided that Claire Balding has decided that Dina Asher Smith is going to win it.
