we think we have couple mice in loft!
Mrs could hear them last night.
I went up this morning, couple damp patches and droppings but very small amount.

is it worth getting pest control ?

or just laying a few traps/poison

Traps is the answer. Poison has them dying in secret and smelling the place out. Mind and check the traps daily though, they have a loveable habit of cannibalism on those that succumb (and leave you to clean the mess of the traps). Peanut butter is the bait of choice but be prepared to be put off it for life. Get a cat!

They’ll just lay poison down so won’t cure it long term

Answered your own question. Get down to B&Q and buy some traps.

I called out the council and they’d laid about 8 traps out each time over three visits. I don’t think any of it was taken as we found no dead mice and couldn’t smell any. Maybe they died outside though
