Ray Clemence RIP

Some great posts here, gents. Definitely the best keeper we’ve ever had, his honours and statistics are virtually second to none in the domestic game. 16 goals conceded in a 42 game season was an incredible benchmark for a long time and in 11 seasons with us, he only missed 6 games too. The video of him when he came back to Anfield with Spurs is brilliant, probably the best reception any returning player has had. Definitely meant a lot to him too.
An unbelievable player who will always be in our best ever eleven and is up there with anybody at all in terms of quality and how valuable their contributions were to our success. Legend in every sense of the word.

RIP Ray. Great keeper and seemed to be a great bloke too. Think he messed up against the Scots but I preferred him to Shilton

Haha...I’ll be honest, I’m not sure what you’re on about here? I remember Molby in court and going to jug but can’t think of anything with Clem. Happy to be put right though :)

No mate I was only joking.Have to be honest and say that Clem really was a fantastic goalie and with watching footie since 1964 I have to say that I`ve seen some of the best but Pat Jennings was always my favourite along with Banks.
As you say, to only concede 16 League goals from 42 games takes some doing but you have to say that the pairing of Lawrence and Hanson was the best centre back pairing I have seen, also helped Clem.

It was Hansen & Thompson who were his centre halves. He left in the summer of 81 after the Paris final and Lawrenson came in that summer. Phil Thompson was a brilliant defender but the partnership with Lawrenson and Hansen was another level again in a manner of speaking. Clem’s back four definitely helped but when you look back at some of the older videos, some of the instinct and reflex saves are brilliant, especially when he hasn’t seen a lot of the ball. Allison is the best we’ve had since him but he’s got a way to go to overtake him.
