Most of the major tournaments started off the same way, but time doesn't remember that. Give it a decade or two and it might be seen as more prestigious than anything else.
And we could potentially be the first ever team to win it.

Not automatically perhaps, but surely an agent could ask for one to be put into a contract and a club could agree, no?

This is from earlier in May. Don't know how reliable it is. The fact that it says he's available for 22.5m suggests not very.
Got this back from AI but not sure how accurate it is.

In French professional football, release clauses, also known as buyout clauses, are prohibited by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP). This means that a player's contract cannot include a clause allowing them to unilaterally terminate the contract or be released from it in exchange for a fixed amount.

I just did the same thing and got this as part of my answer:

"Some French clubs use gentlemen’s agreements or private clauses that serve as de facto release clauses. These aren’t legally binding but are often respected between clubs and players."

So perhaps that's it.

Further details:

While formal release clauses are generally not enforceable in French football due to labor laws, Rayan Cherki of Olympique Lyonnais reportedly has a verbal agreement—often referred to as a "gentleman's agreement"—that functions similarly. This arrangement stipulates that Lyon would allow Cherki to leave if a club offers €22.5 million.

This agreement was reportedly established during Cherki's contract extension in September 2024, serving as a compromise given the legal constraints on formal release clauses in France. However, such verbal agreements are not legally binding, and their enforcement relies heavily on mutual trust between the player and the club.

In practice, this has led to complications. For instance, during a previous transfer window, Borussia Dortmund submitted a bid matching the agreed amount, but Lyon's owner, John Textor, declined the offer, leading to tensions and public criticism.

Therefore, while Cherki does not possess a formal release clause, the existence of this verbal agreement has attracted interest from several top European clubs. Nonetheless, potential suitors should be aware that Lyon's willingness to honor this agreement may vary, and negotiations could be influenced by the club's financial situation and strategic considerations.

Having said that, I don't trust ChatGPT as far as I can throw it, and literally two of its sources were Reddit.

So it seems that while there's no legally binding release clause, there's something of a "don't take the piss" agreement.

Buyout clauses are indeed illegal here. Verbal agreements may exist between clubs and players. The closest to actual clauses that can exist are incentives in a player's contract such as a substantial bonus if he stays at the club for a certain period of time, which would it more interesting for a club to sell the player, even with a low fee, rather than keeping him.

Bit annoying he is with France but I read that we can register more players after the group stage of club World Cup. Wonder if that will be the case with cherki? Don’t seem to have the time to do medical etc within next 9 days
Medical can happen on international duty it's absolutely no problem at all.

Not even being judged on actual stats nowadays, just expected stats.
That’s because “actual” stats are heavily influenced by the players around you.

Plop prime Rodders, King Kev, or Big Earl in to United’s team and even their actual stats would drop, potentially precipitously given the state of that team and coaching staff.

Expected stats help to remove the noise and isolate the actual qualities of individual players.
