lol you compared him to Beckham and mentioned he was white for a reason, so yeah it’s exactly what you implied.

All the stuff about his tattoos and fancy sinks and number of kids and so on was all to do with his move to city was it?
I didn't read it like that. I think younare looking for things that arent there. I took it as simply stating that the abuse on levels that shouldn't be acceptable.

I think Cherki has a higher ceiling than Wirtz. Just watching clips and full games online he just makes football look easy. It’s like he’s hardly trying and he’s having a kick about with his mates. It’s like Yamal , Yamal looks like he’s just having fun.

Both footed , incredible technique, chance creating machine. I think you put him in a possession system and Cherki’s numbers will skyrocket

Hello there, I am a Lyon supporter. Just signed in to share some insight about Cherki as I could read the usual concerns about him, which are, to be frank, quite unfounded.

The main problem with Cherki comes from the fact that he had been announced as the next big thing very early on. When he was 14 years old, he played against players sometimes 3 to 4 years older than him, and he would still bossing them on the pitch, the gulf in talent being immense. He attracted interest from the biggest teams of the time, notably Real Madrid, which forced the then owner, Aulas, to give him a big contract as soon as legally authorized (the day of his 16th birthday) with the promise to be included to the first team. That's how he made his debut with the pros so young... and he rapidly showed how good he was during a cup tie in Nantes in which he scored 2 goals and delivered 2 assists.

But it was somehow too easy too fast. This game remained his best professional performance for years. Skipping the usual learning path for young players didn't teach him how to not rely solely on his technical skills on the pitch. He lacked that sense of team work and the constant commitment to find the most efficient solution even if it is not a flashy one. He is a baller, he loves it so this was what he was doing week in week out, showboating. But he was quickly found out. He could take on anyone but would be easily tracked back as he was always going to make the one touch too much. The quality was obvious but the end product barely existant. And as he is no natural sprinter and never had to prove himself on the dirty work, the combo made him look lazy and arrogant.

The negotiations for contract renewals have always been tight ones. The club couldn't afford to let him go for free, and his entourage used it as a leverage to get insane wages in regard of his actual contribution. Two years ago, in the midst of a very bumpy transition at the club, he changed his agents to be represented by the Mbappé family. Those are the people the new owner, Textor, referred to in very derogatory terms. Cherki now ditched (hopefully) the Mbappés, and I have no doubt the transfer will not be complicated.

But overall, he is a good character, very grounded, with a good education from his family. I very often sees that he is from Northern African heritage, which is true on his mother side (Algeria). But his father is from Italian ascent, and he played a very important part in Cherki's career. Rayan is quick-witted and sharp-tongue, and quite a leader for his young age. He sometimes appears very irritable on the pitch, but he seems a good teammate, he was very active for the send-offs of club legends Lopes and Lacazette.

This said, in all honesty, last year at the same period, I was certain his career would be a very disappointing one considering his natural talent. Even if he was only 20 years old, the fact that he had been around for 4 years without real consistency and long-term improvements in his decision making, I came to the conclusion he'd never sort things out. How wrong I was! What he did this season is really impressive, not only talent wise, but mentally. For him to be able to focus and be as sharp and as fit as possible despite all the pressure and the burden of the child star syndrome he suffered from, it is really remarkable. He's not only a great ball player but has strong mental resources. This point makes me confident that he is ready for the challenge in a top club in a top league.

He will have to learn to have less time on the ball, it might take a little time, but he will do it. In all honesty, I reckon that Guardiola would be a good and patient coach to let him settle in the Premier League.

Could bite me on the arse but I'm more than happy to get this guy over the £105*m player the dips are going to overpay for.
Let's be honest mate, he looks like a talented kid, but at pretty much the same age, Wirtz was Bundesliga player of the season as he dragged an unfancied team to an unbeaten domestic double. He's scored 16 and 18 goals in the last two seasons and already has 29 caps for Germany. I hope you're right, but at the moment, it's wishful thinking to believe that a French U21 international from the 6th place French team is the better player.

TBF I didn't actually say he was the better player, I just think he'll be more than good enough especially for the price.

Unfortunately the comparisons between him and Wirtz will be inevitable and continue throughout the season.

Here is my simple take, from the eye test and stats from fbref:

I think both are good finishers (exceeding xG), and while these stats are comparable, I think taking into account the season prior, I'd give Wirtz the edge as the better goal scorer, not by a huge amount though.

In terms of chance creating, Cherki has the clear edge here. He is basically an alien of a creator, and I think while neither of them are KdB like in terms of most of their creating coming from passing (and volume wise prime KdB is incomparable as a creator), they both create through more ways including dribbling.

They both also have comparable pass%, and for being the main creators in their team, that's actually quite good for both.

The main knock against Cherki now comes from defensive contributions, and you can see Wirtz has the clear advantage here, and in a Pep system you can see why Wirtz is probably the better fit for that reason.

Cherki will simply have to adapt a bit, run, press and fight a bit more than he is doing. Not loads more, just a bit more, because like Kdb, we have to build slightly around him because his qualities are too good.

Cherki has magic and end product that we badly lack. I’m not a big advocate of MGW but if Cherki, Rejnders and MGW come in then the central midfield options significantly stronger and have a mixture of what we were missing this season. Add in 2 decent full backs at least one of who can contribute going forward eg Ait Nouri and imo we are not that far away from the title.

If we can get in those and also get Phil back to his level of 12 months ago and Rodri fit then we’d take some stopping in the PL once they all click.

At least Pep will have to sub at least once. If Cherki runs I give him 70 per game

Tell you what, if you're not English (and I take it you aren't) your English is pretty bloody good! Congrats.
Thanks for that very interesting run-down on a player that most of us won't know a lot about. If he comes to play under Pep, he'll have to work. And there's really no room for divas. Not under the Catalan.
Talent is one thing. Seriousness and application is another. Benzema, as you will know, was in the academy with Ben Arfa. Benzema was always prepared to recognize that Ben Arfa, who he knew well, had greater natural gifts than he did. We know who had the greater career. Benzema simply had a level of application and determination that Ben Arfa never had.
If Cherki comes to us, it'll either be the making of him — or the breaking of him.

(By the way, if you're wondering, l'OL is my “other” club. Took my little son to Gerland on a number of occasions. First time when he was seven. Since I moved away from Lyon, more than twenty-five years ago, I've been far less often. But I have been out to the Groupama a few times. I shall always wish l'OL well. Not rooting for P.S.G. tonight! Forza Inter!).
