Rayan Cherki

If and when cherki signs he will be given the chance to press properly as a unit. We used to be so good at it and will be again.

Pep don’t want him running about like a madman after the ball. Plus city will have the ball for 70% of the time anyway. So he will press but at the right moment and only for a few mins at a time.

Creative players also have more wiggle room due to their impact.

I’m happy to wait and see.
Spot on.

We can compensate for some players who aren't great at pressing - but there comes a point when the entire system breaks down due to inadequate pressing. Case in point - this entire last season. Our press was slow - we were played around - and our high line lead to many goals for the opposition.

We already have to carry Haaland in this regard - a freakishly good #9 but one who isn't great at passing, holding the ball up, or pressing.

If Cherki joins our side and doesn't put in a shift on defense - that may screw up Pep's entire system.

So - with respect - I disagree. Prima facie - we absolutely need Cherki to put in a shift on defense - otherwise - just like at Lyon - he'll be withdrawn from the game even when we need to score.
I appreciate what you are saying and to be honest I can't comment on his so called lack of pressing. If this is a weak part of his game then there is some work to be done, but after watching that wonderful cameo against Spain I would rather focus on the positives which I believe far outweigh the negatives.

Hmm, no. We can't sing that middle line pal.

King of Rock n' Roll has never (to my knowledge) been adapted as a footy song and Iike unique quirky songs unique and endearing. Think Balotelli, think, Niall Quinn's, think Sun Jihai. Those 3 were totally unique and still get sung on occasion. I read a while back that someone thout Sun Jihai song had racist undertones which is utter nonsense. If any blue think that then you haven't been a blue long enough to know it's our dark Manc SOH which got us through the bad times. The banter and camaraderie has unified us as one and we must never let it disappear.

Top dog is ok and may become quite apt depending on how Cherki does, and he'll have to go some to get to where Kev has been for us.

Albuquerque obviously rhymes with Cherki

The contentious bit is he eats frog, or frogs, deffo not he's a frog.

I think its either he ate frog, or he eats frog.

He ate frog is possibly better, I think it is...
Remove frog altogether and try and work agog into it ;-)

Case in point - this entire last season. Our press was slow - we were played around - and our high line lead to many goals for the opposition.

We had a geriatric midfield (both attacking and defensive). Ok, exaggerating a bit. We were lacking the world's best player in defensive midfield for the entire season. The entire midfield was being played around. They couldn't press properly, with the best will in the world. They just didn't have the legs.
That will be hugely different this season.
Second, we had absolutely horrendous injuries, particularly in defence. An one point, all four central defenders (unless you count Josko, who Pep rarely plays there) were out. Our main keeper was injured.
That will very probably be very different this season, because I've never, in more than half a century of following football, seen a team have two successive seasons with that kind of injury record.
We had a player who was chosen by his peers — his fellow professionals — as player of the year the season before, whose form fell off a cliff. Could Phil's form have fallen off a cliff for ever? At the age of 25? Having been the best player ever to be produced by the academy? Oh and being designated player the tournament in the under-17 World Cup.
It's possible… seems unlikely.
It wasn't because one person wasn't pressing, or pressing inadequately.

Everything I read about him says he's lazy without the ball.

The above is just an example.

Podcasts from The Athletic and other outlets have said exactly the same.

The athletic is full of dicks with agendas, trust mw if hebwas off to the rags or scousers he would be not getting called lazy

and who takes facebook posts as fact

I think KDB was quite lazy. He would put his foot in if something got him angry or he lost the ball.
Yaya too but both were excellent for us.
Exactly, throw Mahrez into that who could saunter around when he wanted to, all had a solid midfield and fullbacks behind them and Pep, despite the nonsense spouted encourages them to play to their skills.

We have always had more flair platers who could get stuck in when necessary but also leave that to someone else and conserve energy

He probabdly never even heard it, the term died out decades ago beyond maybe a clown paper like the star or sun
when did you last here anyone call the french frogs?
And it ain't never gonna be a song so chill your bones.
I'm sure my Mrs uses the term, but she does read the Daily Heil and thinks Farage would make a good PM.

The assessment that Cherki is lazy on defense is almost universal among football journalists. For example:

There is your problem you listen to football journalists. I speak to people who have played at the highest level, scouted or coached to form an opinion.

A football journalist is generally an armchair fan, a megaphone for a club or just a wannabe footballer. I know plenty of journalists and very few have any real understanding of the game.

You would be wiser to trust Viana who has played in very similar role was hyped up as a youngster and considered lazy. He would know a thing or two about this.

Or why not listen to Henry or Lacazette and their opinions of the player.

Listen to Jorge Maciel who has coached him.

I spoke to an ex Ligue and curren ligue 1 player to get a further perspective

Huh?

By "look through them" you seem to mean, stick your head in the sand and go all out for this player - ignore any and all defects.

No, that's you trying to make a strawman pal. Always do find it funny that people think what is said in this forum carries any weight - if I said go all out or you say we shouldn't go all out it would make fuck all difference to what actually happens. The evidence is that we are attempting to sign Cherki, so that is moot.

Why would reading more analysis be putting your head in the sand anyway? You have made the same point others have made - he's lazy and doesn't work off the ball, then bring up last year (which wasn't problematic because of carrying a couple of passengers OOP, it was a team issue). Below is from a Lyon fan to show that not only is that aspect improving, he's not exactly lazy and he'd be moving into a better system with a better coach.
Hi Lyon fan here!

I just wanted to clarify something regarding the claim that Rayan Cherki has "attitude problems" because this narrative has somehow now spread all over the internet and it is absolute nonsense.

Here's a recent interview of our former coach Pierre Sage talking about how he also believed it to be the case due to rumours until he coached him and figured out it was all nonsense.

Likewise players such as Lacazette and others have commented about how the rumors they heard prior to playing with him couldn't be further from the truth.

There's never been a single locker room incident involving him. The truth is that this is simply racial profiling. Any North African player who likes to dribble or play with flair will immediately be compared to Ben Arfa and be called problematic at any occasion.

Now he does tend to show his frustration on the pitch like throwing his hands up when a teammate misses a tap-in or an easy pass but that's just eagerness to win and being competitive.

As for his defensive contribution, that's obviously his biggest weakness but he did improve upon it last season. And overall he runs more thanthe average forward in Ligue 1 although he sprints less. View attachment 158251

Likewise he ranks in the average for most running statistics in the Europa League compared to players at his position

He literally says his biggest weakness is his defensive contribution

Hopefully it won’t effect him negatively at all and may have a positive effect.
I was thinking more about his game time than mentality. He looked as though he was going to follow Fodens trajectory, especially after his goal at Newcastle. Had he been fit last season he would have be up against a raw Savinho, an out of form Foden & Bernardo. Now he's potentially going to be fighting for a starting place on the left wing with Cherki, Savinho who's had a full season under his belt, (hopefully) a rejuvenated Foden & Bernardo
