It's about time that type of challenge was made a red card offence if its all about protecting players. Im all for contact in the game and allowing mini.al contact to go without a free kick but can someone give me any reason booting another player without attempting to contact the ball shouldn't be red?
Try doing it anywhere else and you're getting locked up for assault.

A total wanker. He made no attempt to get the ball and didn't even try and just trip him, or pull him back. Instead he maliciously raked his studs down his leg. He should have walked. This sort of offence needs upgrading.
