Real Madrid (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

On what basis? Not having a go at you alone, by the way. In the pre match thread, there were plenty of downright embarrassing conments
No idea really, just a feeling. Underdogs for once, about time we actually showed up in a big game this season and what better place to do it. Professional pride, last chance saloon for some.

Started off ok for 3 mins. Then keystone cops defending and game over.

Onto Sunday.

Poor team selection, awful referee and a few players who really didn’t look bothered. Very disappointing and with another Stones injury to boot.

We knew a few weeks ago, we know now this team needs a major rebuild. Gundogan was lost out there, Bernardo a non entity. Poor performances from Dias, Gvardiol and Foden. Nico was outnumbered and struggled. No idea what positions Marmoush and Savinho were playing. Decent performance from Khusanov under really difficult circumstances. Nice cameo from McAtee as well.

Had low expectations for tonight but was still disappointed.

Didn't expect anything so not disappointed. Still more annoyed at the way we went out to them last year when we were clearly the better team.

We used to be better than these lot in almost every game we played against them. That just shows you the level were at now. They played with us tonight, totally different league the two set of players. One had pace and power, the other were a mix bag of potential and old, tired legs.
Apart from Mbappe who didn’t read the script it looked like they wanted to knock us out with minimum fuss and effort

They’re probably the best team in the world this is the worst version of us since (arguably) 2016/17. Maybe even earlier?

Don’t think players can be judged on tonight - especially newbies and/or youngsters - because it was always an uphill battle.

I think the tactic used against Newcastle was the one. And think it’ll work wonders in the league but tonight wasn’t the night for it. Mainly because of Haaland’s absence.

That was painful. So static, so slow, so lacking in any dynamism. Can't remember the last time I watched a City match just hoping we'd keep the scoreline respectable...
You can't remember arsenal from a fortnight ago?

That’s probably the best Madrid side we’ve faced over the last few seasons. Game was over really after the home leg

Thought Khusanov played well and kept Vini reasonably quiet.
Nico looks like a 2019 Rodri. Obviously got all the talent but may take some time to reach his full potential

Not really changed much we need a really good attacker (preferably Wirtz) and least 2 mire good players

Actually a little fortunate they’ve took there foot of the gas and didn’t make it a 5/6-1 game

Barcelona battered this lot twice this season, once at the barnabéu, 4-0. You think too little of you own team

At last a level headed assessment.

Hope this champion league exit send another message to our owner
For more signing summer
There are going to be more signings in the summer regardless of whether we progressed or not. The question which areas

Pretty much one of those games where everything that could go wrong did go wrong. From conceding an early goal (thought there was a little push by Mbappe on Dias to send him under the ball) and 2 mins later Stones getting injured. From then on we were up against it and didn't have the heart or nous to get back into it.

It looked to me like we were scared of them. We held off from pressing them or closing then down and pretty much stood around and watched them pass it about at leisure. It was only after they went 3 up that we seemed to lose our fear and start playing a bit (or perhaps they slackened off).

While it didn't really affect the result, I thought some of the refereeing decisions were bizarre and we should have had a penalty.

One thing is clear though, Gonzalez and Marmoush are not going to fix all of our problems on their own. I thought both were quite poor (not alone in that) despite combining for our late goal.

It was a game where we really missed Halaand. We had no focal point to our attack and their defence was largely untroubled. I really thought we had chosen that line-up to press them hard but we didn't even try pressing until the last 15 mins, when funnily enough we improved. Either press or drop deeper but to push players forward and not press just leaves big gaps all over the place and they exploited those.

Anyway, I think it's time (beyond time actually) to give Gundogan and Bernardo a rest and try something/someone else.
