Thing which is troubling that at level scores - we only to score 1 goal in 30 minutes

It seemed the players or most of them forgot that - totally deflated

I'm not making excuses but their heads were scrambled with what happened in the final few minutes of normal time and before the players had chance to regain their composure, they got the penalty. It was very disappointing to see us crumble like that - especially after looking like being in total control and the team most likely to score again - but these moments can happen even to the best teams. And let's face it - although I think Real Madrid have more than ridden their luck in not just this tie but in previous rounds, when they do get their act together they're still as good as anyone.

Obviously gutted, its taken me until now to come on here because I knew what was coming. Minor things which if done differently may have helped, De Bruyne was poor last night, but even so you just cant bring him off in a game like this, he and Foden are two players who can take a game by the scruff of the neck and win it on their own.

Walker was terrific, but when he had to come off, Ake should have come on to replace him not Zin. We needed defenders on the pitch at that point not more quasi midfielders. Ake on at left back and the cross for the second goal doesn't happen.

Zinchenko was a better choice than Fernandinho when Rodri, who was knackered, came off. Brilliant though Fern has been his legs are truly gone :(

I'm aware of the irony in this in that Zin and Gundog were instrumental in the goal, but that doesn't change my view overall

I posted something similar about Ake in a MOTM thread after some game or other. He reads the game very well, for me he is quietly efficient and gets the job done without any of the histrionics you sometimes get with Laporte.

Keep saying it, but Ake is the best out and out defender we have at the club bar none

Can someone explain to me why they don't just pause time when the ball goes out of play?
It'll stop all this time wasting shite.

it would be like american football where it takes 4+ hours for a 1 hour game.
what they should do is link the ref's watch to the stadium clock, player falls down injured, refs stops watch, all can see it. same when the ref warns teams about time wasting, just stop the watch, make a point of showing you are stopping time (Mike Dean would be excellent at training refs in a flambouyant gesture)

Good point. Surely, independent of the referee, the game clock should be administered to take account of stoppages for whatever reason: player injury, ball out of play, etc. The technology is there and it would be accurate.
However, as all fans, we like more time when our team is losing and less when we are ahead!

If they stopped the clock every time the ball went out of play games would last 2 hours, or they would have to cut the official time to 60 mins.

But they could employ the timekeeping systems used in both codes of rugby. There’s an official timekeeper and the ref raises his hands to stop the clock if the game is paused for more than a few seconds. It wouldn’t stop players stealing a couple of seconds but it would take away the incentive for players to have extensive “injury” breaks.

And it’s more exciting to see the official clock wind time to full time

For 89 minutes the game management was perfect with no Madrid shots on target. Also withstanding some shocking refereeing decisions. Loosing Walker & Debruyne was a big loss & once they got the goal the momentum was with Madrid, we just struggled to keep hold of the ball.

That is my point really. We clearly didn't help ourselves those last few minutes, baffling really because we've done it before. There were a couple of contributing factors, ref, subs, etc.but there was enough nous out there to get the job done.

Yep walker and KDB going off did change the game ?
We are short in both full backs and papering over the crack with cover players is not ideal

please, Manchester city give pep 22 players that in the team for the right reasons and not being asked to paper over the cracks ? 2 strikers, 2 left backs, 2 right backs, When you look at it that way, we are very short in the squad and the answer speaks for itself

We need to learn that lesson of the DARK ARTS (cheating) Madrid used in extra time
faking injury and rolling about going off like you are done then running back on only to go down again ?
I think we played about 5 minutes of football after they scored the winner, and city should take note,
we should have done the same in normal time.

Also the referee play his part in it, pointing at his watch and adding 6 minutes injury time in normal play
then did nothing in extra time and only added 3 minutes and blew early ?

Extra time non event ...we were done...just shouldn't have bottled it
