Real Madrid (H) | Post Match Thread

Prior to the game I thought City were slight favorites to go through after 2 legs.

City -
Pros -
  • World's best team
  • Still in the middle of their peak
Cons -
  • Have a mentally and physically grueling battle with Liverpool which will affect their ability to fight at 100% in the second leg, especially if the game goes 120 minutes. Can't rest entire first XI between legs.
  • Play away in the 2nd leg

Madrid -
Pros -
  • 7 players know what its like to win the CL thrice. Have been in tough situations before.
  • Need to only draw 1 game out of 5 to win La Liga. Can rest entire first team (esp Modric/Benz) for a week before each leg.
  • At home in the final leg.
Cons -
  • Weakness in defending collectively.
  • Carlo is an inferior tactician to Pep.
  • Weaker team man-for-man than City barring 1-2 players.
Nothing has changed my mind so far although going back with only a one goal deficit is a huge bonus.

Pretty poor based on balance of play, we tore then apart but lost our heads every time we got 2 goals ahead

but you'd take the score at the beginning of the game

Good thing away goals don't count anymore though

this was like Man City in UCL in Guardiola first years...i thought Guardiola learned the lession, like last year, doing a better game management, with clinical subs, strenghtening the midfield...refreshing the players..and of course didnt help Laporte messing up again in this games..hope Stones return: Dias and Stones are more secure, composed and complete . Like we saw last year.
Yep can’t disagree there. It was like a flashback to all the bad things we thought we had eradicated from our game in CL games. We have won 4-3, which on the face of it, with away goals not counting it looks a fantastic result, but we all know we should have scored more and we have gifted them 3 goals.

We are winning but the tie should be all over, we have given them a chance their performance didn’t deserve.

When you're facing 14 times winners of the Champions League and beat them with a patched up back 4 speaks volumes ? We are not fully there yet, but we still hold the upper hand, and we will score and get a result over there.
I will say lessons still need to be learnt in very big games in europe and we turn off for a second and you're punished in a flash ?

How do real madrid keep doing it ? We were in controlled and bang punished again and again
pep and city need a bit of luck when it comes to having a fully fit squad or the right players at left back and right back.

we can beat anybody home or away ? but until we have a left back and a world-class striker then we have to work bloody hard to kill games off against the big boys.

9/10 tonight and 100% every player given their all for the shirt and fans and not much you can ask from them

Final word from the commentary team. ‘A moral victory for Madrid’.

We utterly battered them, but they have that dipper like quality of being incredibly clinical and took advantage of our defence being crippled.

Although stating there obvious, we create a plethora of chances but we absolutely have to start taking a higher percentage at this stage of the season or it is going to cost us dearly.

That is never going to happen with our forward line. It’s head in the sand wishful thinking.

Our defence and control of games is what will win us the big trophies this season.

Worryingly, the last game and half in the CL has shown we have very little control at the moment.

“A moral victory for Madrid”. How naff. It was a game of football not a war. If a team in red had beat Real Madrid with half their first choice defence missing.
BT and those City fans who think it was a bad result or we have blown it are wrong. We have a lead. Madrid will have to cope with pressure. We can defend better. Sometime to win a trophy you have to grind results out. We did it last time in Madrid and can do it again.

Real Madrid are a bunch of chancers , our defence cannot possibly be as poor again next week , and how we didnt put eight goals on the lucky Spanish tw*ts is beyond me. We need three clear cut chances to score one goal in every game we play , if only we could turn the clock back ten years and find another Aguero , he woud have took the match ball home tonight with his eyes shut.

Privilege to be at the game but feels like a defeat.

Mahrez, in particular, cost us dearly, could have made it three nil but chose to shoot with Foden waiting.

He also gives the ball away in the middle in lead up to the penalty.

Dias had a shocker and Laporte a brain fart leaving Viniscus on goal.

So good going forward and felt we could have had six or seven.

You’re talking shit.

It’s Real Madrid we are playing, not Watford and it’s a Semi Final of the CL, not some dead league game.

We won an incredible game of football, fucking cheer up.
Cheer up what for exactly? This RM would struggle getting in PL top 4 in the course of 38 games! They are two levels bellow when we beat them two seasons ago. Every time this season we needed the result we wobbled. This was a great game of football if you support Grimsby Town. We put both the title and this semi in question. Fuck it!
