Real Madrid post match thread

The teams overall level is poor.

How many more times can you make the same excuses for the same mistakes?

Accountability is now the new word.

No one in the club wants to face the truth…

The team is not good enough to win games consistently. Having good moments in the match is not enough.

That game v Madrid has been done to death this season.

We have many more to go.

Zero accountability.

Ederson went from an all timer MOTM performance to a 2/10.

The confidence went at 2-2 and we couldn’t pass the ball.

The team is done for this cycle. Top 4 and fluke the FA cup and move on to next season.

Positives were Gvardiol had a great game and Stones played really well as the 6.

We’d have won that game if Akanji and Ake could have played the 90 mins.

That being said, Madrid missed a fair few sitters.

Mrs SuttonColdfieldBlue turns 40 tomorrow and we were hoping for a nice, pleasant, chilled-out enjoyable evening. Thanks a bunch City - I’ve spent most of the last hour stomping around the house in a foul mood and nearly broken another remote control when that last goal went in.

Entirely predictable though. And yet it’s the hope that kills you.

Shame too, because in large parts we played some good stuff, better than a lot of the dross we’ve played this season. We were almost looking like our old selves at some points. But there were WAY too many complete hospital passes in our own third tonight - you just can’t do that, never mind against them.

Gutted when Ake went off - he looks the most solid out of any of our defenders.

I feel a bit for Rico, he put in one or two decent challenges but he is patently not up to this level of football. Anyone is going to have a hard night against Vinicius and Mbappe (who were clearly targeting him down that wing) and he does his best, but his best just isn’t what’s required.

Not quite up there with the level of depression felt after the United and Feyenoord games, but this is all getting a bit too 1990s “typical City” for me now…
hard times

I'm not focusing on Lewis. My beef is with Pep. If he trusts Lewis at right back against Vinicius then he has lost the plot. And if he rates Lewis as a better right back then Kushanov, then why the fuck have we signed him????

Pep's shown himself to be a brilliant manager - the best in the business at managing a squad over the course of a season. But he's never ever been manager to rely upon to get you a result in a must win, one-off game. Never. I lose count of the games thrown away due to Pep moronic decisions. Derbies we should never ever have lost - and that REALLY pisses me off. Not playing Ferna in the CL final v Chelsea FFS so he could shoe-horn Sterling in and leave Gundo as the woefully inadequate holding mid. Who else could score 6 against Monaco, and go out? And what about our stats v Liverpool. Sorry but the guy is rubbish at in-game management. Rubbish.
I agree, I watch all these big games through my fingers, Pep is an anxious man, it feeds into his teams in big games - I mean we just about edge the really big one v a very average Mila in all honesty. Love the fella but his anxiety doesn't help us on big nights. Tonight though we missed Walker tbf. Give Walker a dual and he's great as he is very competitive and still quick, not the quickest anymore but good enough..big loss for us tonight

Madrid's forwards were quick, incisive and direct and our flagging defence couldn't cope. None of this sideways or back passes for them. We really needed a lead for the return leg and 2 defensive foul ups (Ederson and Lewis) have ruined this. All we needed was to see out the last 5 minutes and we couldn't even do that. Gvardiol and Haaland did their jobs and Foden and Grealish were okay.

To be fair our goal was good but beyond that it's the same nonsensical tactics with poor effort, poor passing, poor movement and lots of silliness.

I highly doubt that a team can be revived by an existing manager once the players lose all hunger.

No way will we beat Real Madrid away. We barely beat Orient.

Manchester City defender John Stones, speaking on Amazon Prime: "A few games after the Arsenal one, I don't know how to put it into words straight away, it's so raw and frustrating for everyone.

"We were in the game until so late and then it's two situations that happen and we concede. It's frustrating as a defender to come away with that result.

"It's a feeling of anger and frustration.

"We need to see games out better. The manager said we need to take accountability for what we do on the pitch, I think we do that. We need to step up when these bad moments happen.

"Today we had a great opportunity to go to the Bernabeu with a 2-1 lead. It's not done. We have to stay positive, which is difficult now.

"As the manager says we need to look at ourselves and take accountability.

"We were right on top at the start of the game and we know Real have quality to come out in the second half. It is avoidable from us as the eleven on the pitch. We have to do better - it's as simple as that.

"We have to keep a positive mentality and try to put it right."

A lot of those players over the 2/3 windows will be more than adequate for the squad. However, players need to be moved on in the summer and replaced with absolute top notch at RB, GK, CM and AMF as a minimum.

Totally agree and hope that will be the case

Yep.
Out of the horses mouth.
Pep said no.

He's the manager.
He picks players not playing well and sets the tactics and formation..
Most games the same this season.
He's changed nothing.
Then we go out and spend 160 mill on player's and don't play them.

Given what they’ve achieved the last few seasons, I don’t begrudge them or him having an off season this year.

This is new to him too, he hasn’t had to transition from one team he’s been part of building to another at the same club and clearly sentiment has played its part in some poor decisions.

I fully expect the rebuild to continue in the summer. Until then, we are going to keep getting results and performances like tonight interspersed with where we keep it going for the full ninety minutes.

We hit the woodwork twice too which seems to have gone unnoticed by many.

We could beat Madrid away.

If pep played to our strengths whilst we are weak...

He won't though.

He can't change tactically.
Or won't..

We were playing against probably the best attack in the world. So a little bit of perspective is needed. We’re not the team we were ,but the continuing cock-ups are a sign of a team lacking confidence. Pep, genius as he is, is making some odd decisions. End of an era I think, but it’s been a great ride.

I genuinely don't know what position he could play in, I couldn't tell you what type of player he is...

Unfortunately he's out of his depth, Seems like a really good hard working lad, He's not enough and I think he'll be moved on.
Eventually, I think he could be a useful utility player for a mid-table team with his primary position being in midfield.
