Real Madrid post match thread

Result was a shame as I thought we actually played quite well in parts. Stones and Gvardiol were particularly fantastic.

Just two bad mistakes at the end. A bad one for Lewis, his height is a problem for him but it was a bad pass to him from Kovacic. Shame for Ederson as he'd made some top saves to keep us in it before. He looked pretty devastated at the end.

Injuries also screwed us as Lewis was only on because Akanji went off. Stones having to go back into the back line didn't help either.

Those with egos on here who act like they can manage better than Pep may say Khusanov should have been on but maybe he's not up to speed with how Pep wants him to play.

It's still only half time and they're effectively 1 up. They weren't great and vulnerable too. They only won due to individual mistakes. All still to play for despite the despondency on here.
About Khusanov not being up to speed so we now just splash 200 million on players who are not up to speed ?great transfer window again, and if not being up to speed is a problem why the fuck was Kev playing almost 90 minutes there ? he didn't look up to speed from minute one.

Looking back, I'm not even that disappointed about last night. We were beaten by a younger, fitter, better team. Wouldn't be a surprise to anyone if they went on to win the competition. Even if we'd have held on and gone to the Bernabeu with a one goal lead, they would probably have comfortably overturned it next week.

We played pretty well, but this team is at the end of their cycle. The minds are willing, but the legs less so. The midfield needs a huge overhaul in the summer, and some difficult decisions need to be made. No one would begrudge De Bruyne or Bernardo moves abroad, whilst Gundogan's contract obviously shouldn't be renewed. Kovacic could possibly leave too. Don't know whether such a turnover of senior players, all in the same position, is realistic but drastic surgery is required to get us competitive again in that area.
They had 4 midfielders at the back. Valverde at right back and, after Jack came off, Savinho didn’t take him on ONCE. Their centre halves likely wouldn’t have lived with Erling in a foot race and yet we never moved the ball quick enough to test that out.
As I said in another post, there are different ways to win a football match and if we’ve not got the personnel to play how we want then surely we’ve got to try something else?
Madrid came last season and barely had a shot, played 9 behind the ball for most of the game and got out with a 1-1.
The fact that we’ve been ‘found out’ by every team we play, particularly the later a game goes, save for Ipswich and Salford, suggests we need a plan B.

We could have thrown one or two extra defenders on at 2-1 and said well take that and, if we get chance to hit Erling or Marmoush quickly, we will but it seems that is somehow beneath us!!

"Just two bad mistakes at the end", you say that like it's the first time that's happened this season. Bad mistakes at this level crucify teams and are the difference between great teams and good teams, it's not something we can brush off like it's a one-off, this team has been making those sort of mistakes every second match since November and show no signs of letting up.
Ederson was having a great match but then gifted them a couple, it's not good enough from your number 1. He did his usual best to give them a pen in the 1st half as well but luckily the guy was offside. Rank poor decision making from him again.
If we play like that again next week we will be on the wrong side of a 3/4 goal defeat.
They outplayed us for large swathes of the match, we had a good spell before we scored and then for 5 minutes after. Struggling to think of another period where we looked like we were on top.

Indeed. One plan that isn’t working anymore and no signs of it changing.

Not like we hadn’t had the warnings in the first 15 mins either when they really should have been at least 2-0 up.
Your both right but I think Pep has started a change in the "system". Unfortunately lack of key personnel and disastrous recruitment has stifled it.
I suspect we have started to look for and recruit players with an ability to take advantage of those moments of chaos rather than slow it down to our usual pattern.
Like him or not Nunes looked to have some of that in him. ( it's not an example I can defend for long !).
I'm confident from the look of the new recruitment that we will not be lacking in athleticism, size , ability or flexibility.
There are few , if any , teams that can play our system as well as we do. Our success has come from tweaking positions within the overall framework . It will continue to do so with the right players.

Only in Manchester city you buy players to play them 6 months later on. What a crazy thought

You’re right mate. I apologise but I hate to see our team criticised so much after all they’ve achieved over the last 10 years - just because they’re having a tough transitional season with tons of injuries
Injuries are a key factor. Players past and others potentially not good enough equally so. Big rebuild on the cards, with a few stalwarts going more than likely.

Summed up quite well. Time catches up with every great player and sadly for us half our great ones have hit a wall at the same time. Hardly surprising given the monumental efforts they've put in the last few years.

As tough as losing last night was the reality as you rightly say is they would have blitzed us at their place. There's also a possibility a couple of their key defenders will be back, though in all honesty I don't think they'll need them.
Every side finished exactly where they deserved to in that revamped league - Madrid finished eleventh - a young megabucks side with an elite coach. That young megabucks side were gifted two goals. I'm not having it that Madrid play dead for long spells deliberately - we were on top for long spells. I'd go youthful high risk at their place and hope we can eliminate the unforced errors.

We were winning until 85 mins. What exactly would you have done differently.
Same with Feyernoord, same with Brentford. Learn from them mistakes. Gundog is not the man to bring on clearly. Game management to be improved. We wasn't winning from being the better side lets have it right, they had 20 attempts at our goal. We got our noses in front and proceeded to do stupid things which we have done all season.

I don’t think I’m quite as bleak as most. I expected a defeat, but was encouraged by what I saw for the most part.

We’re not out of the tie by any means.

Not really that stressed by a narrow loss to Real Madrid any day of the week. It was the narrow losses to the likes of Bury and Wycombe that got me panicking.

Looking for the shake hands emoji , we're all hurting keep the faith.

We played as well as we have all season, but make no mistake Madrid could have easily scored at least five.

We lost, things happen, it’s football. Nothing to do with the banner, get over it. If you support a team get used to being disappointed, whatever you are feeling the players will be feeling it more. Support the team, we can still do it and if not, we are still up with the massive teams. Come on City. No more banners though, let’s be classy.

Yep agree. One error and it’s in the back of the net 10 seconds later because we have no one there to defend it. Ederson should be launching that ball into the channels for us to chase and press up the pitch not hitting it to a defender in our half with no cover behind him if it doesn’t come off. Completely shambolic that goal and the third isn’t even worth discussion it’s that poor. Madrid are very good. Much better than us and deserved to win but it’s the manner of the win that is the hard bit to take.
For all Madrid's youthful megabucks players and all their attempts on goal, they scored two goals courtesy of special gifts. Even then, Mbappe miskicked.

Love great supporters like you. We played a very good team last night. Yet, we should have won. Eddie made 3 superb saves & one error led to a goal. Rico made a few fantastic tackles on “entitled Jnr” and was caught out once. Yet you give them shit

Stop questioning Pep -
Jack had a great start then the injury curse struck again - ditto Akanje. Ake had to be protected after coming back after injury. What could Pep have done?
stop playing players that are only half fit. We bought new, young players. Play them and start the rebuild we desperately need.

Close definitely not beneath us but it is beneath pep ..

I'll watch the return with the sound turned off to avoid BT's pro-Madrid commentary and RF's comedy voice. Which radio stations broadcast in sync with BT?
