Real Madrid post match thread

I thought all 3 Real goals were disallowed for a split second after they were scored given the reaction by both sets of players.

Strange game all round.

We were outplayed for most of the game , Ederson made numerous saves , correct me if I’m wrong but don’t recall Courtois making that many saves . Putting Kovacic on when we had the new lad on the bench was criminal.
Simply not good enough in midfield or defence .
Or putting on Lewis instead of Khusanov, or not bringing Marmoush on much earlier for Kev, what's the point of spending big money on players if they can't even come off the bench ?

Yeah but that's the thing, if your role is to take risks and play killer passes you have to make some of those, he made none which meant he was just constantly giving it away and putting us under pressure because Madrid were dangerous whenever they had the ball, Pep never fixed it.

And what's the point of transfer action if Pep is just going to bench them and when he benches them he doesn't even bring them on except one of them for the last 5 minutes ?
You're not considering the opposition we were playing against & the unique circumstances of this season. As Walker said in an interview last week, KDB attempts passes that no one else in football can see, let alone make, & It doesn't trouble him if they don't come off.

He'll keep trying until one does find the player he's looking for, & it's those moments Kev's known for & that we all remember. Last night was always gonna be a tall order for us, but considering our season so far, it took a shinned equaliser & us gifting Real two others which decided the match. These are things we can work on & improve.

As for the bench, it's obvious Pep went for his most experienced line up from the best players he had available, & if not for injuries to Jack & Akanji, it could've been a different result. The new recruits' time will come. Last night wasn't the time to start with CL novices Khusanov & Reis, when we had Akanji, Dias, Aké & Gvardiol fit to start.

We've bought these players with our future in mind. They were never bought as an immediate solution to our woeful season. The problems we now see have been coming for a long time, & are gonna take 2-3 Windows & a lot of high profile player departures to rectify.

We have to be patient & keep the faith. With a fully fit squad, we're not that far off. However, keeping a squad half filled with 30-35 year old players fit, with few like for like options to call on is another matter altogether.

The number of times the GK, whether Ederson or Ortega, opts for a long goal kick near the end of the game....

And last night wasn't the first time it's led to the opposition scoring.
The irony is that Haaland was practically begging for long balls during game and got none. Then, when the time definitely wasn't right for it, suddenly Ederson decides to give it a go.

Same with Feyernoord, same with Brentford. Learn from them mistakes. Gundog is not the man to bring on clearly. Game management to be improved. We wasn't winning from being the better side lets have it right, they had 20 attempts at our goal. We got our noses in front and proceeded to do stupid things which we have done all season.
You cant pin last night on Gundo FFS

I actually thought Rico did ok against one of the best/ fastest players in the world
Our main problem has been /still is our defence is getting older and injury prone and our midfield is old, weak and slow. This showed later with Gundo/ Kovacic and Bernardo try to hold younger, faster Team!! We have would have got away with it sometimes?? During the Summer we needed upgrades/younger players in Defence/ Midfield ( dare I say like Liverpool over the last couple of seasons) all we got was Gundo back!! This Summer major changes are needed!! Obvious but true? Right back? Centre back Braithwaite? And a couple of younger Midfielders and given the right ones we should be good? Goodbye and thanks to Gundo, KBD, Bernardo, Kovacic,Jack and Nunes.

Looking back, I'm not even that disappointed about last night. We were beaten by a younger, fitter, better team. Wouldn't be a surprise to anyone if they went on to win the competition. Even if we'd have held on and gone to the Bernabeu with a one goal lead, they would probably have comfortably overturned it next week.

We played pretty well, but this team is at the end of their cycle. The minds are willing, but the legs less so. The midfield needs a huge overhaul in the summer, and some difficult decisions need to be made. No one would begrudge De Bruyne or Bernardo moves abroad, whilst Gundogan's contract obviously shouldn't be renewed. Kovacic could possibly leave too. Don't know whether such a turnover of senior players, all in the same position, is realistic but drastic surgery is required to get us competitive again in that area.
It’s kind of exciting, but I just hope sentiment gets left at the door and Viana & Pep see eye to eye immediately on the requirements.

It's not that the new players didn't start, it's that they didn't even come on except Marmoush for like 5 minutes, it was just another example of Pep's ludicrous use of the bench or lack of, I don't expect the new lads to be prime Rodri and Aguero immediately but I expect them to be better than some washed up players that we've used this season and play instead of them, yet in typical Pep style only Marmoush comes on for 5 minutes while Lewis plays an entire half with Kev getting almost 90 minutes, and he couldn't even give Gonzalez 5 minutes so brough Gundo instead.

As for Kev let's be honest, how many of those magic passes has he pulled off in the big games since his comeback last season ? the one to Bobb against Newcastle in his comeback game aside I can't recall any other pass, he looks better against lesser teams but we can't carry him in the big games in the hope that he will find the magic pass because it's just not happening.

The problem is replacing these players, the bulk of whom have been cornerstones of a team who made history.

Our recent signings wouldn't inspire much confidence that they're going to be replaced with upgrades. Doku, Phillip,s Nunes etc
