Real Madrid post match thread

Maybe but that’s the embarrassing thing I think our squad is so fucked we have half of it who can’t do 90. Ake was excellent bar one loose touch first half. Akanji Excellent and Stones or Gvarsiol motm for me. That’s our best back 5 we had at first and sadly it can’t get through a game. Not sure our two new lads are ready to step in either.
It's a peculiar but not wholly unexpected situation. It might be that, like at Leyton Orient, we have to regularly change our centre backs at half time for the remainder of the season so that the old ones can be protected and the young ones assimilated. Question is whether doing so we can be stable enough to secure the run of victories that will be needed to guarantee top four. Ake was excellent in recovery but actually gifted them possession twice from poor control in the first half. Given he hadn't played in a month, however, that was little surprise.

we have some players that have mentally checked out, maybe due to the intensity of winning for so long. Ananji and Wderson fall into this camp for me. We also then have players who have been flogged to death and/or too old (Bernie and Kev (second part)), players who are not playing in their best position (Rico, although not sure where his best position is), players who cannot get a break (Jack and Johnny, although it’s looking better there) and players who we don’t utilise fully (Haaland).
We can change the first issue, by replacing them, we are already addressing the second with the new signings (and more to come in the summer) , this also might help Rico but Pep needs to find a way to play more to Haaland’s strengths without changing his ideals. This is a tough season, but still take a step back, we are not far off champions league, not quite out of this years competition, we are in the cup and have a prestigious competition in the summer. So it’s not all that bad

Ederson cost us the game.if he sends it long into any corner they have to create something while we are 10 men behind the ball and have a chance to hold on to a good 2-1 . But no. He shoots it into a crowded midfield.
Pathetic decision to rush out for the 3rd too.

I’ve gone right off him because he’s clearly not arsed.

Get Flekken in. Proper goalkeeper.

Really good post and I agree with nearly all of it.

My only exceptions is that Bernardo was excellent too in midfield. After 30 minutes KDBs legs had gone, and without the ball it was like playing with 10 men and Bernardo was having to do the running for both of them.

You could see why Pep kept KDB on because even on one leg he was our most dangerous threat.

But the impact of this risk is we’re falling apart at the end of games because we’ve been defending for most of the game with a man down.
Kev was blowing badly the 60th minute and should have been off then, or at half time.

Rico is never the answer.... to anything

We had CB playing RB, who was injured. Rico is one player who has been playing in that position, often, for two years, so the only choice was really him or Khusanov, who has very limited experience. That Rico seems to be the current whipping boy can be your only excuse for this post.

I wouldn't slag Rico off or have a go at him but in my opinion & it's only MY opinion, he isn't good enough for an elite side

Thought Rico did OK until receiving that tricky ball from Kova.

It was hard to deal with it, anyone would have struggled in that situation.

Pains me to say it as both are legends of the club, but a would the current versions of Bernardo and KDB start important games for Liverpool, Arsenal, Bayern, Madrid, Barcelona, Inter etc? The answer is no. These are the clubs we are competing with, but our current midfield options of Gundo, Kovacic, KDB and Bernardo and Nunes are not good enough to compete at the top table. We obviously play Newcastle at the weekend and I'd take there midfield 3 of Tonali, bruno and Joelington over any combination of 3 of the midfielders listed above.

Tried to make sense of a few things, some I can, some i can't. One is that Madrid were really decent and put in a very good away performance. They don't appear to care about conceding the odd goal, the confidence comes from understanding knockout football is 2 legs and is won all the way from kick off to final whistle.

City faced a storm at either of the game - the early one we weathered (albeit slightly fortunately) and the one at the end, largely of our own making, we succumbed to. There were also other periods of sustained Madrid pressure throughout but if one example of a structured approach to cup football exists from last night, it's the strong start and finish from them.

City played pretty well for large periods. Some of that was Madrid sitting in a good shape and letting us have it, but we did fashion decent chances and play pretty well. Stones was largely good, Gvardiol excellent, Savinho really battled, Haaland good.

There was a stark contrast between the two teams in getting from deep midfield to edge of the box, in that Madrid appeared to be able to suddenly up the pace of passing, make it very direct, and suddenly have a shooting chance - contrast that to City's much slower approach.

The Diaz goal was tough, but surely only a small subset of Blues thought we were the better team to take the win, 2-2 seemed almost inevitable looking back with hindsight over the 90, almost like it would be no other score.

Until the Farce. Everything about their winner was utter fucking dross.

looked forward to the January window as giving us an opportunity to inject some legs into the side, and have a free hit against Madrid, and we got 5 minutes of Mamoush and ended with the usual Lewis, Gundo KDB, Bernardo plodding around the pitch. Didn't understand the strategy or the subs last night, or the starting line up, we deserved to lose by a far bigger margin. In the last 2 euros rico has come off the bench for the 2nd half we have conceded 7, it's no coincidence.
