Recruitment issues

Funnily enough I’ve just listened to the latest Statsbomb podcast. They work for a lot of top clubs and help them with their recruitment via their analytical models.

Their opinion is that City used to be very good but in the last couple of years have let it slip and are relying too much on the subjectivity of TB rather than what is actually best for the team.

Their view was that Torres might turn out OK, Ake would not solve our defensive problems and Dias was a surprising choice given the analytics.

Overall they thought we had had a below average window.

I don’t necessarily agree with them and time will tell but it was interesting to get a specialist opinion from a company that usually praise City’s transfer decisions.

Liverpool isn’t one of their clubs but they said yet again their analytical department had bought well and were leaving other clubs behind.

It wasn’t all bad news though...United are terrible!

Torres is highly rated so that’s odd

Ake the same and really looks the part Why do they think he won’t help ?

Why was Dias a surprising choice looks like he is what we need big good on the ball a leader not slow perhaps not quick tho

Liverpool bought well ? A back up winger a back up left back and a midfielder who I am sure will be great but does he suit there style and who will they drop ?

The guy at Liverpool is flavour of the month like the guy at Leicester was. It’s only ever short lived.

we had good recruitment initially following takeover (preceded by excellent signings of zabaleta and kompany), then a bad period headed by marwood when we were restricted by ffp and should have just kept the money in our pockets. Then we had another good run (Fernandinho top of that list) and another lull before pep. Another good run started just before pep (de bruyne, sterling, ederson, Walker, Jesus, sane - when you look back arguably our best recruitment period post toure/silva/aguero) and we have just been through another dip (Rodri, mahrez).

the reality is, players are humans not computers and you can look at the stats all you like but it sometimes just doesn’t work out. Law of averages dictates you will end up with a run of successful signings and a run of poor ones not an even spread.

if it was all about stats then there would be no scouts and managers wouldn’t watch videos/go and watch players.

We also try to get players who are good people. The rags just buy image. Thats why all their players are cu'#s.

And why we have a team of soft fuckers and no leaders.

The best teams have a mix. It's clear we have a talented bunch whose heads go down when things get tough or opposition get in their faces. That's not good enough.

I think they are saying they are good players but not a good fit. Only time will tell
