Red Cafe in meltdown

Thats 211 years since Britain (and much of the west) decided to outlaw and fight against slavery.

At that point, guess who were a much bigger player in the slavery racket?
Seeing as Britain ruled that part of the world at the time, it's a serious shame that their 'fight' didn't extend to that part of their empire as well.

For all the bad press regarding human rights in The UAE.

The UAE sustains more migrant workers from the 3rd world and their families than Britain and the rest of the EU put together.

I`m wonder if the millions that are fed through wages earned in the UAE have a different viewpoint ?

How long ago was it we invented "concentration camps" - I believe it was the Boer War?
It was around the same time as the independent empire of the Turks invented wiping out all 1-1.5 million of an ethnic minority, I belive.
And while falling short of a formal apology, Brits tend to regard that incident as a very bad thing.

I am sure most Turks feel the same way about the Armenian Christians.

So the British ruled the ottoman empire at that time.

You learn something new everyday.

Actually, slavery in England was effectively abolished in 1706. It was only in the empire that it took longer. It's why for that intervening century escaped slaves tried to reach Royal Navy ships - as sovereign ground they were deemed free upon getting there.

Before anyone passes judgement on anywhere else we should look to our own shores first. If our country was the model of tolerance, polite behaviour and crime free then fair enough but it isnt. I have felt far safer walking round Dubai late at night than I have in Manchester. They have laws that I dont agree with but I am sure we have laws that they dont the point is if you are living in a country you have to abide by the law of that land.
Strangely enough we don't seem to apply that principle to, for instance, the Russians as this same thread shows.

You know, the part where you say, fine, they might be a bit homophobic, prone to invading Ukraine, etc etc but we must pretend they are exactly the same as us and hence exempt from criticism.

Which says little about Britain, Russia or UAE but a lot about those commenting.

The Ottoman Empire never ruled the area that became the UAE.
I think a) people are sick of us derailing this thread and b) we are close to being thread banned.

I think we agree Dubai is the shining light of the middle east, let's leave it at that.
