Red wine appreciation thread.

Anyone who regularly pays more than £6 for a bottle of red wine is a mug!!

As has been proven with champagne any expensive wine is just that, expensive. The same quality can be had at a fraction of the cost.

I could go into tesco and pick you five bottles of red wine all under £5 and you wouldn`t tell the difference between those and one at £10!

Anyone wanting a really nice red with lots of blackcurrent tones and quite easy to drink check out Co-op Jaccarinda Hill Shiraz. Very nice!

You may get one or 2 gems in the cheap range but you can tell the difference in taste massively imo.

I have a severe fondness for this great wine atm also at a good price imo.

Morrisons have got 25% off 6 bottles. That's on top of any discounted price.
Just picked up nearly £50 worth for £22. Enjoy.

McGuigan Bin71 Merlot....

Grey label in Sainsbury, normally £10 but sometimes on a 50% off

Bought two boxes last time and it's a cracking wine

McGuigan's have a cracking range of wine, both Red's and White's, but their Shiraz is my favourite. Can normally pick a bottle up for around £7 if you look around a bit.

Laithwaite's is a good wine club with excellent customer service too e.g. if you don't fancy one of the cases they deliver, they'll just come and pick it up gratis (you get a monthly delivery from them).

Went to Aldi today and bought a couple of very nice Cab Sav under their Cimarosa label, South African, absolute dogs danglers

less than £4 quid

Dat.

I don't know if it's available in the UK but if you ever come across a red by Cullen's from the Margaret River region of Western Australia,it's well worth the expense.
On a side note if you are ever in W.A.,travel down South and book in for lunch at the vineyard, fantastic food, wine and sevice.

I regularly partake in a bottle of red - or two.

I usually go for the southern hemisphere wines - Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Australia

The other day, I was recommended "Amarone"

Seen it in Sainsbury's and its fookin expensive - £14 a bottle (expensive for me, should I say!!)

Is it worth treating myself??

Higher range Italian wines like Amarone and Barolo are decent enough but in my view overpriced. You can get a much better wine for less. Try Malbec from Argentina (hint of violets). Goes great with a good steak. Shouldn't cost more than £8-£9. Faustino V Rioja Reserva is also very good but is now about £10.

My favourite at the moment is Dutoitskloof Shiraz from South Africa (spicy peppery and full bodied). It's not available in the shops or supermarkets but you can get it online from a distributor called Hard To Find Wines. An absolute snip at £7.99. I've bought two lots now and Mrs laserblue raves about it too. Don't buy in small quantities though as the carriage charge will load the price per bottle.

I'd suggest it is. Amarone can cost a fortune and the sainsbury's one is as cheap as it gets. It's a good quality wine - supermarket branded aren't always - and less expensive way of finding out if you like the variety (albeit 14 nicker is still a fair whack).

I am biased as amarone is by far my favourite wine.

Give it a go!

There is an Amerone Reserva on sale at Sainsburys £22.99 a bottle. Sorely tempted to push the boat out on that one.
