After years of drinking tongue-furring, teeth-staining merlots and cabernet sauvignons I've finally discovered the joys of light-bodied red wines, especially those you can chill in the fridge.

I've tried a few from my local Sainsbury's (Brown Brothers Tarrango, Beaujolais Villages, own brand pinot noir) but was wondering whether anyone could recommend any other bottles, preferably less than a tenner?

Thanking you.

Try some McGuigans (Aussie brand) mate - both the reds and whites can be had for about £5.50 (Tesco's) and all are very palatable. Let me know what you think.

You're putting red wine in the fridge! WTF

Quite acceptable with some very light red wines (and that's according to a few wine critics in the press, not just weird old me) and actively encouraged on some bottles (check out the Brown Brothers' Tarrango as mentioned in my OP). Sacrilege with heavier wines though, I'd agree with you there.

Each to their own, and all that ;-)

My favourite French red is Brouilly a light fruity fragrant wine :- http://www.terroir-france.com/region/be ... ouilly.htm. You can find it in Sainsbury and all the usual good wine merchants. Chilled red is nothing new and also not wrong, French Chateau's and wine cellars were chilly places and certainly the lighter wines are served chilled. Drink it how you like it, not how someone tells you to !

Thanks, bud, both for the suggestion and the moral support ;-). Will also give the McGuigans a whirl too, DB.

I never had chilled red wine until we went to Spain around 6 years ago and went to a restaurant in the mountains where we got a caraffe of chilled red. Bloody good it was too. Never had it at home. Funny you mentioned Merlot and Cab sauv as that's what I always have! I go to France quite a lot and lots of delicious reds but I still like Blossom Hill Soft and fruity...lol
