Ref Watch

I have a working theory that VAR doesn't overturn a decision when the ball doesn't go out of play for a while in fear of having to call play a long way back. If after Sterling was taken down the ball crossed the goal line I think VAR would have taken a more serious look at it.
Reminds me how we should have stopped the game when Trent handballed at Anfield just to put pressure on the VAR HQ. When the game is still going on it detracts from any decision that needs to be made the longer play goes on. Obviously a pen was never gonna get given when the scousers went down the other end and scored.

I think the Dutch ref who gave handball against Zinchenko is a smart guy who has a decent grasp of how to use the VAR. I don't think he actually saw Zinchenko handball it but he gave it knowing it might have been handball safe in the knowledge he would be able to review it and come to the correct decision.

I agree but the definition of "correct" is somewhat flexible in English football.

I admit to being thoroughly nonplussed about how it works but surely, to give a penalty, you have to be 100% sure secure in the knowledge that, if it is a penalty, and you haven't given it, VAR will notify you and ask you to have another look.

Giving a penalty, and stopping the game in the process, based on nothing more than loud appeals seems very weak refereeing to me. Possibly, even, something more sinister.

I dread him reffing City games

Me too.

Thing is, I saw him reffing a CL game once, obviously not one involving English teams. He was excellent.

Which makes it all the more worrying when he keeps on getting big calls wrong when City are playing.
