There's always been 'political' refereeing, probably since the time they changed the crossbar from a length of rope. Now we have wall to wall TV coverage it's worse than ever.A balance of using them?
A player is either one side of the law or the other. That is the only balance that should matter, but we all know this is not the case.

On a 'Ref watch' kind of theme, without going too far down the 'agenda' route does anybody know when we last got a penalty in a derby match?
By my reckoning it was the Tevez one in the lge Cup semi in 2010.
In all the years I've supported City(since the 70s) I can only remember us getting 2 other pens against them .I stand to be corrected but I believe Vasell missed one at the Etihad in about 2006 or 07 and Curle scored one at the swamp in the early 90s.
As for ones awarded against us, I really wouldn't know the exact amount , but there's certainly been a lot more for sure!!
