Referees’ Performances | 2024/2025

Making your body unnaturally bigger is an intentional act in itself, not the handball, that’s the whole point!
It can be unintentional and be an offence The semi final, the player intentionally put his arms behind his back but by turning side on to the ball, presumably to avoid being hit, the ball hit his arm that wasnt his intention but exactly the opposite but still an offence

Thanks for proving it
I think you are assuming each criteria shown as a bulletpoint has to be met, it doesn’t
So if the second criteria is met then it’s an offence

Well, it doesn't really prove anything. The laws are so badly written. But to me the first offence covers all deliberate handballs, the second how an accidental handball can also he penalised. If not, it makes no sense to me having two separate offences set out. But I am an accountant not a lawyer, thank God.

Anyway, it's not worth arguing about. It's all so subjective they can decide what they want in any situation (which rather defeats the object of trying to be specific).

It wasn’t an offence though, it was deemed part of his natural movement.

If he’d been deemed intentionally putting his hands there in order to make his body unnaturally bigger then it would have been given.

I disagree, of course. You can be attempting not to make your body bigger during a block by placing your arms behind your back as best you can, but by accidentally standing laterally in front of the ball and not frontally you can be making your body shape unnaturally bigger if your arms aren't clasped tightly behind your back.

To quote the law, if you wave your arms behind you like a whirling dervish "the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised". I paraphrased the first bit :)

Otherwise, why do you think players run around blocking frontally with their arms clasped behind their back? There is nothing natural about that position in any movement on a football pitch. So why bother?

Frankly, as I said earlier, I think the law is a complete pig's breakfast and needs to be simplified, not made more confusing with more and more layers of subjectivity that no match-going fan can possibly interpret in real time. But that's just me.

There’s always going to be an element of subjectivity, which is why players end up making as you say an unnatural movement. Ultimately there will always be one like the forest one where it’s a very fine line in terms of being able to judge intent.

I think others have said the ref didn’t even give a foul so clearly didn’t see it. It would be interesting to hear what VAR told him. Went over the top of the ball and hit the other player studs out full on the shin, bending his ankle back, but maybe not all that hard, nothing to see here

So you run with your arm stretched out behind your back? I have some good knowledge of biomechanics and you don’t

Only if he puts his arms behind his back to consciously do so which in clearly nonsense Again he did what a lot of players do but he turned side on to prevent being hit in the face by the ball

Not enough force, bent leg height issue subjective looks worse because slow motion just why did bernado have his leg there
