Referees’ Performances | 2024/2025

The law states 'obvious goal-scoring opportunity'.

I'd still say red and Martin Samuel summed it up perfectly by stating Haaland's career stats, so the idea it wasn't an obvious opportunity into an empty net is ridiculous but it does give them enough of a grey area to pretend it was a reasonable decision.
I have just checked and you are correct. The wording was changed recently. However the principal stands

VAR is just shit and the officals are incompetent. We had a big decision go for us with that Rodders hand ball at Everton. Every club thinks its stacked against them. Its the lack of consistency and the fact that it appears to have as much human error involved as when it was just the ref on the field.
I can't believe Blues still quote this absolute shite.
It was NOT HANDBALL. Every regular poster or just plain reader of them knows it was NOT handball.

WTF does it take to drum it into Blues. It's been explained time after time why it WASN'T handball.

Oh and by the way, it WASNT handball.

And it would have been pulled back for an offside

It doesn’t. It says denying a goal scoring opportunity.

Law 12 of the Laws of the Game lists the categories of misconduct for which a player may be sent off. These are: denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by a deliberate handball offence (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within their penalty area)
But does apply to the goalkeeper if the offence is outside the area.

For those who say the assistant VAR has no influence I give you Sian Massey - Ellis. And the liner who said 'it's a handball by Haaland' from 40 yards away was one Darren Cann. He sees a handball from 40 yards through a couple of defenders but doesn't flag for an unobstructed view of one from half the distance!!
This "explanation" by webb highlights perfectly the ambiguous nature of var.

In this instance the ref said handball no goal, var literally find NO EVIDENCE of handball but uphold the refs decision.

Surely to god if there is no proof of handball then the goal must stand.

If it were a red team or versus us they would say ref was wrong, so, no handball = goal stands.

Their rules allow them to control the game by not having to apply the actual facts of whats happened to their decision.

For whose end do pigmol need to control games, their job is to apply the rules fairly.

A full overhaul is needed now.

Maybe I should have used a better example. What i was trying to say is that every team thinks VAR is stacked against them. Fans of other clubs think we get all the decisions go our way.

Don't disagree. I didn't see it live in the stadium and have only seen the stills but seems pretty obvious to me, as if he doesn't touch it either Haaland is straight through on an empty net or is slightly wide of an empty net.

I'm not sure how they decided that wasn't an opportunity but I suspect they decided to interpret it that way to avoid 'spoiling the match' by having one side down to 10. The laws are great but only when you don't treat it as entertainment and want to keep the majority of the customers happy

I'm not guessing, I'm quoting the law for this season from IFAB. Just checked and it said that for last season as well.

Law 12, sending off, bullet 2:

denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by committing a non-deliberate handball offence outside their own penalty area

Absolute disgrace mate. Red card all day. The only reason the ball was heading away from goal was because Henderson swatted it that way. Despite what pgmol put out there is nothing in the laws that state "obvious ". It only has to be an opportunity to score. I don't blame the ref for not seeing it as it happened so fast but VAR should have bailed him out. Afterall I was there and didn't have a clue Henderson had handled it. Only knew exactly what happened at half time when friends started texting me.
To add to my disappointment I woke up on Saturday with a swollen ankle. No idea how I did it. Walked round Wembley all afternoon. This afternoon been to the hospital and they have confirmed my ankle fractured in 2 places
Thanks for the answer and sorry to hear about your ankle. I fell off a ladder about 6 weeks ago and it's still not right, but that could be because I'm not resting it enough.
As for VAR, when I saw it on the screen I struggled to remember a possible red card incident and thought it was because Henderson might have fouled Haaland.

Can't have evidence that the refereeing team decided a cup final and not the teams on the pitch being shown on the FA's website.
The ‘Emirates’ Cup final, no less.

Unless we are ‘Incredible’ and can beat the ref as well, we’re on a hiding to nothing. We’ve had to be that good.

Still fucked off with that decision
Me too, but the club have pissed me off not making a massive stink about it.
Had to stop watching after that decision on Saturday as I was that stressed I could feel a seizure coming on, had to go to bed chill and try and stop it, it’s a fucking joke, pissed off.

Yeah, I agree. It's cheating in plain sight and we've said fuck all.
