Referees' Performances | 2025/26

I was thinking we should use the towel to dry the ball and take thirty seconds doing it before every throw-in. The "rule" would soon change.

It's just a nonsense. Nobody can dry their boots or the ball before a free-kick when it could have a decisive effect on ball movement, what is the point doing it just for a throw-in? A throw-in is just to get the ball back in play, it's not a result of a sanction for an offence that is meant to give an advantage.

My thoughts exactly & just like snoods it would be considered a step too far.

Was reading something last week where Anthony Taylor was saying he doesn't bring his family to games anymore because he gets abuse - that bit didn't surprise me!

I was surprised though that a ref would bring his family to the game in the first place. He isn't part of the show. He isn't there to perform or entertain so why would a ref bring their wife and kids to watch him run around and occasionally blow a whistle?

Like a traffic warden letting the kids watch him ticket cars.

What you said there is part of the overarching problem is that refs these days want to be part of the show, they have forgotten that if a ref does his job then you shouldnt know he exists, webb going on tv and that bellend mike dean on soccer saturday dont help matters either.

Nobody pays to come and see the ref and that should be drilled into them.

In fairness to the Premier League match day officials, they have worked their way up through reffing at lower levels.
They realise, especially in the lower leagues, they need to be firm and unyielding to managers and coaches. I attend non-League games and some of the teams' coaching staff are really aggressive and abusive to the officials.
I don't think many of the referees are that egotistical, but they cannot be faint-hearted.
Unfortunately, the media (especially Sky) want to analyse and highlight the controversial incidents, especially if it involved the Red Shirt teams.
So, ex-referees are employed to provide expert analysis.
This will post-match analysis will grow, as controversy is what Sky/TNT/Talksport feed off...

Not forgetting the premier league OG.

The original fucking arsehole.

It wasn't a regular game, where he'll just be in, do the game and straight out. It was the UEFA Cup Final. It would have been a great honour to be selected for such a game and it was probably a few day trip with a bit of downtime. Why the fuck shouldn't he have his family with him for such an occasion?

Wouldn't surprise me if he gets either a euro or world cup final.

He might reconsider having his family not being at that one.

Next euros at Wembley?

It was believed by journalists who were there that he'd been lined up for the last World Cup Final if Croatia had beaten Argentina in the semis.

He’s not saying he won’t have that at this sort of occasion, he’s intimating they don’t go to any games now despite the fact 99.99% went without any incident. I’m sure if he got another big final they’d go again.

Not sure who the official was today, but he didn't have a good one, did he? I had high hopes after the carded that ex-rag early on, but he let similar challenges by both sides, including one by the same player, go without even a whistle.

Missed a few fouls, including one on Gonzalez that resulted in a break away and Everton's best chance, seemed ok with Savinho being bear-hugged for ninety minutes, and found new and inventive ways to block off city shots and passes by putting his own body on the line. I know Savinho can be a little delicate at times, but genuinely surprised he managed to keep himself clothed today. If he hadn't of done, I would have expected Sav to have got the card for being de-robed on the field of play!

But I think the clear winner has to be, and var has to take some credit here also, allowing Tarkovski to place both his hands around Kovacic's neck at a corner on 93 minutes, not his shoulders even, and push down for leverage. I mean, that's safe, right? Nothing to see here!

There's a few refs that seem to be in love with this finger wagging "you didnt fool me" thing. He did that numerous times today.

A lot of them were pretty clear fouls but I'm sure this knobhead felt really important doing it.

Didnt have the bollocks to book anyone for it, but that wasn't the point as long as we all know the ref is the star of the show.

Winds me up no end.

He was poor but didn't manage to cause any major issues.

2 mins extra time first half when their player was down longer than that at the start of the game and 7 in the second half, subs didn't take long, never bollocked anyone for time wasting and we didn't do what teams against us so taking an age to get back to the halfway line to restart the game.
