Religion

Take home pay.
I wasn't sure if he said 10 or 20%, hence me saying 15%.
Tried to talk to him today about it but because i was very scathing about the whole thing he's now blanking me.
Up to him, it's his life, if he wants to be a silly **** and pay for his ministers new car or nice holidays then that's his business i suppose.
I've never seen a religion that doesn't pass around a collection box. My girlfriend knows a couple who moved to America and set up a buddhist temple, and they're absolutely loaded from it. You know, buddhism. The one where you're supposed to eschew material possessions in exchange for a more spiritual pursuits.

The other classic story I was told by a friend recently was how a female friend of his went to one of those guru retreats and was surprised to find that the guru was making moves on half the women there. "Of course he was" was his exasperated response.

People eh, what are they like?

Meanwhile I read today that Donald Trump is still grifting, probably the fault of politics and some guy out of Arcade Fire has been accused of sexual misconduct or whatever. Music must be to blame for that

A quid in a collection box is very different to a percentage of salary but yes, i get your point that most religions fleece their followers

A quid! You tight bastard. My mams Church tut if it's less than a fiver and they now have a card reader. At 87, she has only just stopped doing coffee mornings for them. Meanwhile the church own a former shop, downstairs is rented out for meetings whilst the upstairs is a two bed flat. They also own a 5 bedroomed house. Guess which one the Vicar and his 9 year old son live in.

The Old Testament is as Christian as it is Jewish. The bible bashers love to revel in the damnation of all but them. How moral is that. How moral is even Jesus saying if you don’t love and believe in him
You burn for eternity? How moral is it that he endorsed Slavery and basically said no matter how bad your master is you need to respect him? Both books and characters are complete immoral and show anybody that no being capable of creating everything would be so petty and vindictive.

Christians who aren’t Jews are told in the New Testament not to keep to Torah tradition, other than the 10 commandments, which is still only a guide that everyone will fall short on.

It isn’t phrased quite like “love me or burn” but Jesus does say in the Gospels “the only way to the father is through me” so yes the meaning of what you’ve said is right and no it’s not moral.

However Jesus didn’t endorse slavery, you’re wrong about that one. What he was quoted as saying in the Gospels is around the whole turning the other cheek thing rather than saying slavery is good.

I think for a leader of the time, in the first century, Jesus was very moral compared to other leaders, if what he said was properly followed politically, history would have been a lot better.

That doesn’t mean he’s the son of god of course and the hell thing is just plain wrong, but a lot of it about how to behave here and now is very moral stuff.

Oh...so sorry for insulting your higher intellect and knowledge. It's religion, mate...all bullshit. Many Christians follow the OT.
I’m not claiming to be a higher intellect, I’m just someone who once trained to be a New Testament scholar before giving it up when I got a family.

I am not religious at all myself but I think when criticising a religion we need to get what we’re saying right.

I avoid criticising Islam for that reason, I know it’s bullshit but I feel unequipped to take the scripture to pieces.

Yeah, you're right...I avoid Islam too because of that. But I don't think I'm too far off with what I said... Christians like to pick and choose which parts of the OT to believe...and what they're more comfortable with.

That maybe so with what they believe in regarding different stories but they are specifically told to ignore OT tradition other than the 10 Commandments. A Christian doesn’t need to follow Leviticus for example.

Depending on your denomination you have around 60+ books in the Bible and 40
authors, spread over thousands of years (Moses’s supposed/claimed time and when that was written was 1,500 years before Jesus lived!).

There’s also a ton of scripture that was left out and deemed not canon by the Catholic Church. The Bible is only the Bible because of what earlier Christian authorities decided to put in it, it’s a compressed collection of books really.
