Religion

Certainly not living by rules set out over a thousand years ago from people who were scared of thunder.
Well the "rules" that science is working to understand were around billions of years ago.

Moses never existed. Noah never existed. You actually believe a dude lived 900 years? Eternity doesn't exist either. Our universe will, like everything else, end. Long before that our sun will do what every other one has, die. You are entitled to believe any old shit you want though. You're in good company. People are scared of death and religion they think gives them a get out death card. It doesnt. But good luck going through life believing unbelievable crap. Like the moon was split in two? Spoiler, it never was. We know that now, but, i bet you still believe it because your book says so. The world wasn't created in 6 days. Adam and Eve never existed. I could go on all day but you will never accept it. Conversely, if you showed me proof of god i would say, fair enough, still wouldn't worship him or her or whatever it is. The god in all the Abraham books is an absolute psycho. Why worship something like that? But, as I said, crack on.
Where were you when I was made to go to Sunday school and Mass every week. I could have used your argument every week against my mother;-)

Telling my mother and school teachers i wasnt going and getting a truck load of shit for it. The more hassle they gave me the more determined i became. Spoiler. I won.

So, in your view, what is the point of life?
There is no 'point' to life. There is life and you do your best to have a good one. And it certainly isnt a fucking made up invisible **** who never existed, telling you not to eat shellfish. But to kill.uour kids if they have a strop. If you think that it is, your whole life is a waste of fucking time. You will bd worm food like me. And thats a good thing..

Just taken a break from alternating between reading the Viz comic Twitter feed (there’s a great letterbox thing about klaxons on it today) and checking the City score to suggest that ‘religion’ isn’t necessarily about a God who gets his knickers in a twist about what we get up to down here, nor is it about people projecting a Big Daddy figure onto the universe so people feel a bit better about life.

If it has anything going for it (and it might be a load of bollocks for all I know) it is probably to be found in the experiential insights of characters like the three I have quoted above.

And there’s a lot of them to choose from.

Personally, I would start with someone like Nagarjuna or Chuang Tzu.

Yes, but science is willing to accept that sometimes it’s wrong and tries to remedy that. Religion? Fucking ruined the world.
Science also gave us the nuclear weapons that Mr Putin has at his disposal and at least in part has fuelled a lot of environmental concerns.

There isn’t one. Sorry if that pricks your little bubble.

The sooner everyone realises this the sooner it will be a much better place for us all.

Live, love, laugh. Be kind to others. Make the most of your limited time on this planet because when you're dead, that's it. You don't go to heaven or hell. You don't get to repent your sins. You don't get to say sorry to people you've wronged.

Religion allows people to believe that all the above are possible. It's a load of fucking bollocks it really is and I hold those who believe in utter contempt.

I would say religion is about trying to work out how we fit into creation, science is about the mechanics of creation - for me the two go hand in hand and both have a good deal of mystery about them. How people work out their own "salvation" or "position of comfort" is up to them. I think its OK to question folks' views but name calling those who disagree with you doesn't seem a very good argument for one's own views.
