Retirement...when, how old and how much??

not sure about that tbh, pre 2022 my ISA was returning close to 11% PA and even now is averaged at about 8. Accepting if you will the current shitshow will end at some point in the not too distant future, I'm still working on a 7% average.

Oh and just so we're clear, I'm no expert :)
Which isa are you in?
I opened mine in march 2021 and have lost about 8%.

I use Fidelity, but its just a wrapper, guess I've been lucky with the funds I bought

I was going to go with them but ended up going with nutmeg. Made a mistake by the looks of it!
it's not really who you go with but which fund you buy, Fidelity have a regularly updated top 50 and basically I just picked from that, happy to admit I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing most of the time

I retired years ago.
Never stopped since.
Travelling all over the world with my Mrs.
Regular jollies golfing and sailing with mates.
Go to operas all over Europe plus monthly concerts in the U.K.
Spend two months a year in France.
I don’t have time to watch tv and feel sorry for people who think three cars mean a thing.
Where do you go sailing out of interest?

37 years public sector pension, was offered V E R at 55 which included a V R package . Took me approx 3 seconds to make my mind up and sign on the dotted line . A year later the wife took early retirement 38 year NHS pension. Never looked back best thing ever and we can count ourselves lucky . Lots of our friends in similar positions have now done the same . Ironically this diabolical government want people in our position back in work ……….

They can go fuck themselves !

Life is for living , live it before you are too old and can’t ! ;-)

I'm 54 now and 15 months left on the mortgage and a loan cleared next month.
Once they are cleared I'm intending to put the money into a savings plan for about 4 years and buy an apartment in Bulgaria (about £30,000), then save for another 4 years.
I have a pension that can be taken from 60 that will provide circa £1,000 a month, a lump sum of about £18,000 and another £7,000.
I will have another pension payable when I reach 67 which I intend to defer when I retire at 62 or 63 and "draw down" about £5,000 a year from my savings - lump sum between I retire and deferred pension and state pension age, and retire to Bulgaria.
The cost of living there is less than half the UK, so I could survive here or live there.
Always the possibility of renting out my house, selling it or splitting the year between the two.
No way will I be toiling until I am 67, and would be quite happy sitting on the balcony reading, or watching documentaries or Vlogs on YouTube etc

Retirement is overrated said no one ever, I’ve never slept so soundly after nearly 35 years of shifts/nights/weekends it’s a game changer. Shifts for me are a killer, I really noticed it about 5/6 years ago how bad I felt after night shifts. The earlier you can retire the better,I’m not saying forgo the rest of your life to do it but if you can save to finish in your 50s as by your 60s you’ll probably be too knackered to enjoy it.
Night shifts are just awful aren't they? The older you get the harder they are to recover from. I'm in my late 50's and just before Christmas changed my area of working in order to avoid night shifts, well shifts in general to be honest. I now work Mon - Fri, day time only. The latest I finish is 6.30pm, the earliest I start is 8am. Often you don't realise what impact shifts have on your life until you stop doing them. Health wise I already feel so much better. Unfortunately I am not even close to being able to retire yet.

Bulgaria being in the EU means you can only get a visa for 3 months before having to return to the UK . You can return to Bulgaria after a week in the UK for another 3 months then repeat same . It’s a pain in the arse destroying so many retirement plans , we were looking at moving to southern Spain but those plans now firmly on the back burner until the situation changes . Brexit an absolute disaster:(
