I'm hearing that our plan is to have him as an inverting left back (our weak spot last season at the back) but also being able to provide cover for Saliba/Gabriel. Let's not forget we were incredibly fortunate last season that Saliba was fit for the whole season - coming off the back of the Euros that's unlikely to repeat itself so cover is needed.

Additionally Timber was out for pretty much the whole season last year and he provides options across the entire back line.

Still thought we'd have signed a DM and attacker first though.
