Richard Dunne {merged}

Last Season - 1st game

1 J. Hart
5 V. Corluka
2 M. Richards
26 T. Ben Haim
3 M. Ball
11 B. Elano
6 M. Johnson
19 G. Fernandes
29 K. Etuhu
17 M. Petrov
24 C.Evans

No need to mention the four previous seasons - Dunne was immense. Do you think it is a wonder Dunne struggled stepping back into that? The only half decent defender out that lot would be Richards, the only one to want to head a ball would be Richards. Corluka would look nice on the ball - but don't ask him to tackle or stick his head where it might hurt. Dunne and Richards were asked to do far too much at the start of last season - both suffered - no big surprise.

Dunne is a hero for me - always will be.

Richard Dunne has been part of the rise and fall and rise again of Manchester City, and in many ways he has epitomised the club over the same period. He has given us some great memories (player of the season awards) but he will more recently be remembered for some costly blunders, but through it all most City fans retained a soft spot for him. One thing which can never be questioned is his commitment to the City cause during his time at the club.

If it wasn't for Kevin Keegan, who helped him to get over some of the problems associated with a drinking culture at the club during the Royle era, he may have ended up on the football scrap heap before his career had ever really got going.

Dunnie was at his best when he had to concentrate, particularly against the likes of Utd and Liverpool, but when his concentration lapsed, which it did regularly last season, he could cost us a game in just a few seconds.

He loved City and was upset to leave just as things have started to look up for us. He was expressing his disappointment at the club's unwillingness to keep him. After 9 years he probably felt that he deserved better than that. He also said some kind words about the fans and the club in the same interview, he was just upset at the manner of his departure.

The club has moved on and Mark Hughes can't afford to pick players who could cost him his job with lapses of concentration, hence his departure. He probably thought that it was unfair to ask Dunnie to go from being club captain to sitting on the bench. Dunnie is worth a starting place at 50% of Premiership clubs so his move will be good for him and with the profit we have made on his sale, for City as well.

I, for one, wish him all the best at Villa and will be giving him a good reception at Villa Park in a few weeks. During the same game Villa fans will no doubt be slating Barry so lets show our class and give Dunnie the reception he deserves.

Well said..top post that

news on his settlement.....

Richard Dunne's £2million Manchester City pay-off negotiated by... his wife

Published 20:52 05/09/09 By Simon Mullock

Richard Dunne's multi-million-pound pay-off from Manchester City was negotiated by his wife.

While football agents are often seen as driving the hardest bargains for their clients, there was no doubting Helen Dunne’s determination to ensure her husband was well looked after as he headed towards a £6million deadline move to Aston Villa.

The Dunnes and their advisers were aware the City skipper qualified for a testimonial next year to mark a decade of service. And he was due a loyalty payment because he had not demanded a transfer.

The Republic of Ireland international has been popular with City fans, so when he was being sold in the wake of Joleon Lescott’s £24m recruitment his wife Helen wanted the best possible deal for her man.

Chris Farnell, the respected sports lawyer, has been advising the Dunnes but wife Helen was present for the critical meeting with City officials that finally led to his move to the Midlands.

Club insiders believe she asked for a £6m farewell payment for her husband. City rejected that request but Helen did manage to land a £2m farewell gift.

...so Dunney's wife helped get a severance payment. What next - take the kids in?

Nowt wrong with his wife doing the talking. Negotiations like that just need SOMEONE to do the talking for the player. Good on his missus I say.

cracking post!

Wrong, Dunn was often caught out against the top teams and that was part of the problem. he is an average player who is very inconsistent. I have watched him many times and thought "why the fuck did he do that". Players like him are not good enough for where we are now. That may sound cruel but it is true. I hope he does well, however, he will fade away and we will all see that he is not as good as some on here thought.

A psyhcologist would have a field day on here....

It feels a little like the family dog you grew up just went to the vet for the last time.....

Dunne had an enourmous symbolism for many Blues-he's one of the final lnks with Maine rd,he was there during the shit times, the shitter ones and the better ones...a lot of this is not just about football.
It's about sudden, rapid and enourmous change, and how we deal with it.
It's almost like an "injustice"...he's our captain, our leader-he should be the one to pick up the cups.Like a real-life Grimble.
But top football has never really been like that-especially not for us.

It's hard to let go of something that evokes powerful emotions-sometimes it blinds us to the obvious.

I agree with Damocles on one point though-if we have no room for sentiment,at City of all places, then that's a little sad.
After all, isn't that the only explainable reason why we're "33 years-and still here?"

100% agree
best post on the topic
i think dunnie has always been used as a scape goat and i belive if similiar mistakes were made by existing cb they would be easily forgiven
dunnie is an absolute legend at the club will always be my favourite player for what he has done to the club
we could have gone down so many times if it wasnt for this collosal
over the top doesn't begin to describe the harshness of the criticism he has faced by some fans on here
farewell dunnie you will be truly missed and go down as one of the great city legends i hope we beat villa but i fucking hope your class haha

What do people actually expect Cooky to do ??

We have a player with 3 years left on his contract worth 7.5m, who is also worth 5m as a tfr fee. This same player would not get a game this season. Cook was well within his right to try and see who would be interested.

Cook's responsibility is to get the best deal for the club, and he has saved us 12.5m.

If Dunne didnt want to go to Villa he didnt have to. He could of sat in the stands like Danny Mills, but that is not good to a player that has the chance to join a team that finished top 6 last year.

His comments were daft. If he thought he was gonna play when we have bought 2 centre halfs for 36m and also chased John Terry for half the summer, then he is a fool.

He had a chance to stake a claim for a place last season, but 3 red cards and some crap performances saw that he was never gonna get another chance this season.

Good luck to him, but its left a sour taste in my mouth

absolutely spot on Prophet, i even had a rag at the gym this morning trying to lecture me on how badly we dealt with Dunney - naturally he got put in his place rather quickly with pretty much exactly what you have said.

Question: How many own-goals did Dunnie score in his City career and is he the all time Premier League top own-goalscorer?

Once more Dunne tops the table, joint most red cards and now joint most own goals

6 - Richard Dunne
6 - Frank Sinclair
5 - Jamie Carragher
5 - Henning Berg
5 - Michael Dubbery
5 - Rio Ferdinand
5 - Richard Rufus

Wowee... one more than 2 world class England centre halfs..
