Richard Dunne will not be forced out of City

I really do hope he stays just for being a loyal servant to the club. Not only that but he is a fairly solid player and will be a perfect squad player. He is the type of depth we need to build a successful club.

Agreed, I don't believe that Dunne should be kept purely because of sentiment, I believe that he still has the quality to be a good back up player and provide adequate competition for the first choice centre backs.

The issue really is whether he's happy to stay in that capacity. As long as Hughes & Dunne have sat down and both been honest about their plans and expectations then I'd be delighted for him to stay.

Errr...I'm going to get blasted for this, but I DO think we should keep Dunnie out of sentiment.

He is a year away from a testimonial, and if he doesn't get one now, that will be shit. Like it or not, Dunny was our player of the decade. We have the money now to be really classy about things, his £40k per week isn't really making any sorts of dents in the wage bill and we have no need to sell.

Luckily enough, all this is academic anyway, as he is still the best/second best defender at the club. On form Dunny is miles better than Onohua/TBH/Richards at CB/Kompany at CB etc.

The current problem with Dunne, the one that is prompting all of these 'sell him' threads is simple; he hasn't got a big name, and he's not the most fashionable player.
If John Terry was our player of the season for 4 seasons running, then has one bad season, there would be no 'sell him' threads, because it's John Terry and the quality is there. Dunne is known in football circles (and if you personally know any professional players, I implore you to ask them yourself) as one of the best defenders in the league. Richards once called him one of the best defenders he'd ever played with, as good as Ferdinand and Terry. He is just 29 and is now coming in to his prime.

We don't know what happened last year, but it is clear that Dunne had a terrible season and lacked concentration. His performances for ROI were still outstanding as usual though. Maybe he had family problems that caused him to lose concentration, maybe he had problems with the new fitness expectations, maybe he had piles and couldn't run quick enough, I don't know. What we do know about Richard Dunne, is that he has been our captain for several years, and our best player for more. He has consistently shown that he can overcome the boo boys (he's fat, he can only play with Distin, he'll never make it in the Premiership, etc) and I'm betting he will do it again.

It's interesting to see that most of the Dunne Out lot are the guys who are screaming because we didn't sign Kaka.

That's just rubbish mate. People want him to go because he isn't good enough now that the club has raised the bar.

Not sure about that

On his day he's great but he's too error prone and makes too many costly mistakes for us to be relying on him at centre half.

100% agree with this post.

No room for sentiment in football. He's not got the ability to perform for a club aspiring to be in the top four or top six - before you bite my head off about the latter question whether Aston Villa or Everton will be in for him!

If we signed Lescott in addition to Touré and then we signed Distin on top of that (unlikely but you never know) then he'd be surplus to requirements with Nedum already here. It's as simple as that for me.

People have been screaming Dunne Out for years, it's just that now they have a better excuse than usual. People wanted to dump him when Distin left, because he Distin made Dunne look good. People wanted to get rid of Dunne when we got back in to the Prem, because as he proved at Everton, he isn't Prem quality.

If Richards and a bunch of professional footballers think he is one of the best they have played against, then he's good enough for me.

Also, and this seriously isn't an idle threat, if we sell Dunne and buy that fucking twat Distin back, I will send my season ticket back, as the club that I knew will be dead. City is bigger than any one player and I'll still be a fan, but having this much contempt for a person who had literally bled for the cause, and rejected moves to bigger/better clubs to help US out of the shit, is a step too far. Think of it as my form of a protest.

I think Dunney realised last season that there were going to be a number of quality players coming into the club and that he would probably find himself moved further down in the pecking order. To his credit he hasn't come out and moaned he has just got on with his football and he sounded very upbeat in interviews that he gave last year which I think gave an indication that he was willing to stay and fight for his place.

Great post.

Odd how we expect 100% loyalty from players but we don't feel the need to return the loyalty.
