Completely wrong about the majority giving him stick. I remember lots of rows in the kippax about the dickheads who were booing a player in a blue shirt FFS!

This who 'never boo a blue' thing is complete bollocks

I remember countless city players getting bare shit in the 80's/90's

Trevor Morley was another one..had his own 'hate Trevor Morley' singing section towards the front of the kippax near the away end

Even the Goat suffered abuse when he first arrived

Not saying it was right..but it happened a lot more than some would admit to

Everyone knows that we have a number of stupid fans who have to boo at our own players, even last year when we became champions again FFS!

And 'Never boo a blue' isn't complete bollocks. You are a moron if you think most fans boo. Only dickheads boo.

So, who do you boo?

I don't boo anyone..I'm just saying it happened..regularly

Not EVERYONE gave him shit.

Just the load mouthed fat gobshytes who couldn't play football if they tried.

Absolutely - I remember when he got injured at Sheffield Wednesday - he was on the side of the pitch and the game continued - dickheads saying we were better off without him - quite a few fans turned on the dickheads that day .... Which was nice.

Did it happen regularly, I don't remember?

City had been rock solid in defence (compared to what we had been used to) and Edghill had played left, right and centre back (once) in that time and was the main stay,

He was used to give the width on the right in the 2000 promotion season as there was no real wide right midfielder. At home in the second half in front of the New Kippax is where he seemed to get most stick when city were going forward, not for his defending. It was unfortunate as the balance of the team didn't help him and he was doing his main job very well.

Royle made him captain in 2000 and it was unpopular with the usual knockers, and the first perceived mistake they slaughtered him. His come back was the away game, for both him and Andy Morrison, City were one nil up and they both played well but Weaver let in some 40 yard rocket and New Years Day was ruined.

other than that and this is just a personal view. having curle next to him, mcmahon and white / sheron in front of him doing their jobs as normal, edgy looked a good player

having kit symons next to him or summerbee junior in front of him or some of the various other players from the frank clark era not doing their jobs and edgy having to cover for them and continually leave himself exposed out of position...probably made him look a lot worse than he was.

Spot on, left horribly exposed time and again by the likes of summerbee and others whose names my rose imbued memory filters prevent me from recalling

I remember Barnsley away, we lost two-one and it was also the day the plod started attacking blues at half time on the concourse behind the stand.
Anyway, one lad, who i still see at aways, was throwing a lot of grief at Edghill and when he was confronted by someone else, it nearly spiralled out of control with a lot of blues around us getting irate. A couple of digs were thrown but some 'rather large characters did calm it down shortly afterwards. A horrible atmosphere though and there was no need for it, he was scapegoated for no reason.

Sat in the main stand years ago, there was a chap who started every game with a chant of "Edgehill for England". Followed by many "bloody hell Edgehill".

4.28......Plenty of cheers for Edghill
There was, mainly of relief, and there was even a small round of encouraging applause as he walked up.

But I can remember it vividly, funnily enough, and as everyone realised I was him walking up to take one, absolutely everyone in the city end looked a each other and went "oh fuck, edgehill!". You could hear it buzz around the city end. He was notorious at that point for having never scored a city goal.

When he banged it it there was a roar of relief and gratitude. That was the point we knew we were going to do it, too, pretty much.

Took some guts that pen did.

Every single recollection in that post mirrors mine, DD.

Quite a few people are saying he was absolutely shit, but that wasn't the case.He was a very promising young player, picked for the England under 21's and looked to have a bright future.I am not sure whether it was injuries or a loss of confidence or both but his form did dip.On his day he wasn't a bad player but the level we were at attracting anyone a lot better was nigh on impossible.

He got horrendous abuse that game against Coventry but during that period we were so shit a fair few players copped it as well.Indeed sometimes the whole team as when another goal ripped into our net the whole crowd would boo and a resounding chorus of,''What the fuck is going on??!!!'' would boom around the ground, followed by more booing.Ahh those wee the days, lol!

just a quick point. edgy was called up for a training session/ get together with the full england squad whilst he was in the u21s so he was on venables' radar at one point. similar thing happened to paul lake under bobby robson before italia 90. remember he did make his first team debut before neville did and edgy was part of the u21 team that won the toulon tournament in 1994

other than that and this is just a personal view. having curle next to him, mcmahon and white / sheron in front of him doing their jobs as normal, edgy looked a good player

plus he was a confidence player

I concur, good point

Awful lot of guts that pen, and as good as you will see.

Meanwhile I have never clocked those interviews at the end- "year 2000 the Phoenix is rising, the reds are finished" How prophetic is that? Brilliant!!

I remember him as a very classy fullback, perhaps I need to read his autobiography to find out what went wrong.

One thing for sure, he didn't deserve the abuse he received, neither did Paul Power, neither did Ian Bowyer, neither did Peter Swales.
