Try living in most of the rest of Europe, pretty much the whole southern hemisphere or anywhere in Asia and you'd see just how much we've become sensitive pricks and frightened to death of being branded as having anything other than views commensurate with those of the liberal left.
I've lived in the US, Asia and parts of Europe, and they are equally as sensitive to public figures making idiots of themselves. We are not so distinct from the rest of the world, that is quite an English notion in itself. I've lived there as well and still run businesses there and whilst not wishing to sound patronising, I can assure you that the bollocks we have to put up with here with regard to what we can and cannot say or do, is far more anally retentive than pretty much anywhere else, possibly other than the States and the northern European Countries including Germany.
I may not agree with their view on women officials (in fact, I definitely don't because it is illogical), but I agree entirely with their right to say it if it doesn"t offend normal standards, which in this case, it doesn't.
