Rick Holden

No doubt Rick was quality for Oldham which is why we bought the bugger.....no idea what happened to him once he got our shirt on though!

Before the new Kippax was built I used to prefer not staying in one place so I stayed at pitch level and walked up and down the length of the Kippax, where possible, depending on the crowd. There were times when I could overtake Ricky Holden as he was working his way down the wing. He always had his mouth wide open as if he was gasping for air. He looked slow, over weight. But when he got to the corner flag he, more often than not beat his man and got the cross in. I remember Holden with affection.

I remember when we used to have that dolly camera being pushed in front of the Main Stand towards the North Stand. The fella pushing the combined weight of trolley, cameraman and camera overtook Ricky Holden in full flow.

He is based over here in the iom these days.

-- Mon May 21, 2012 8:04 pm --

He is based over here in the iom these days.

I have a fond memory of him turning a Coventry defender inside out when we beat them 3:2 away. Coventry were 2-0 up at half time and, I think, Holden did his trickery for our third. If memory serves me correctly, the fullback actually fell over after Rick's third or fourth turn.

Tricky Ricky was slower than he looked. He could cross the ball but it took him so long to get into position the match had usually ended... actually make that the season! I think Redmond and Dissa were the 'makeweights' in the deal; another Peter Reid shambles of a transfer. These were of course the good 'ol days of the annual 'Paul Stewert heading back to Maine Road in £2 million deal' headlines, of Geoff Thomas (?) being apparently prepared to "walk to Maine Road" although never actually making it, and of our 1993 failure to sign Blackpool's tricky winger Trevor Sinclair despite his almost pleading with us to sign him and finally giving up and going to our new mates at QPR instead! I think actually that the Blackpool board refused to sanction his sale to City after they felt aggreived at the way City had handled Paul Stewert's transfer back in March '87, but thats another story...

Happy days...

Absolute shite, though went wild when he scored the winner in extra time in the league cup v Bristol rovers at bath, same night the announcer called Gary flitcroft 'Gary flipflop' as he came on as sub

Great night that was and a win 2-1 after extra time, I recall the Rovers fans singing "Where's your caravan" to our Tricky Ricky before he hit the winner !!

He could cross a ball so you could see why Reid wanted him in the side with Quinny up front only Rick was never fast enough to get into a decent position although think I remember him sticking one on a plate for Quinn against the Rags in a 1-1 Derby game at Maine Road.

Also remember Holden running into a full pelt Terry Phelan in front of the Kippax in 0-1 defeat to Chelsea, Pretty sure Mick Hartford got the winner.

used to love watching Rick Holden.Boy could he cross a ball with accuracy. Used to play on the left wing myself similar to Rick, could cross the ball with both feet.At Oldham he was absolutely devastating, teasing the ful backs.Very fond memories I have of Rick, love the guy.
