Rickie Lambert

Foget the price - is he good enough?

To answer the previous poster: £4m is the price that the Guardian is running with.

To answer you: yes. 60 goals in three seasons is good enough for a 3rd-choice striker. He's nothing fantastic, but if he's your starting striker in league and FA cups you'll probably be fine.

As a third striker for a team competing to get in the top 4, yes.

For a team with a genuine ambition to win the title, no.

Ambition was the first word that popped into my head when I heard about this transfer mate, quickly followed by "a distinct lack of". They'll sign more players yet so we'll see how they do with the rest.

The first of those 3 seasons in which he scored the bulk of those 60 goals was in the championship

Good player. £4m is a steal for Liverpool, he's obviously no Sturridge but he's still an effective striker, and English too so helps with their CL quota. Seems like a decent piece of business for them.

Last time Liverpool came 2nd they bought terribly, looks like history repeating. Some thought Boyata getting a new contract was strange, their heads will have exploded upon hearing this news.
Not saying Lambert is a bad player, he's not! But a team in Liverpools position shouldn't be buying players of his ilk and when they are you have to start questioning the aspirations.

Fair enough. But he's had two seasons in a row with 15 goals in the top flight.

Nobody here is arguing that Rickie Lambert is an ambitious purchase to lead the line at Anfield on the first day of the season, guys. We're saying that for £4m they've just found a way to rest Suarez for League & FA Cup games, which going into congested fixture schedule is good business.

A very good signing. He's a different option to their first choice,he wont complain at starting on the bench and he will score goals for them.

Also, the English factor will further endear the deserving ones to our wonderful, unbiased press.

He was at their academy up to 16 wasn't he?

I guess that will mean he also qualifies as home-grown for the CL quota?
