The news broke as I was travelling to the game on the tram from Altrincham. To say it was a shock was an understatement. I knew Ricky had his demons in the past but I thought he'd turned a corner.
I was there when he won the world title. Scousers, Mancunians, fans from all over the country and world were there, all united for Ricky. He was one of us you see. A working class kid from the same mean streets we grew up in. That cheeky Mancunian unassuming sense of humour, happy to laugh with others and at himself. One of the lads. One of us. Also at a time we weren't very successful on the football field Ricky was proud to wear his City shorts in the ring and walk into the strains of Bluemoon. He gave us a presence and kept our name relevant. His cheery face will be missed around the Etihad and in Tenerife where I saw him many times. I never saw him grumpy, or refuse a request for a selfie with his many fans. Fuck it just won't be the same over there now. Rest in peace Ricky I'm sorry you chose this path, you were truly loved by many.
